Computer work
Mary Finnie, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada:

“My daughter works with a computer and has been exhausted at the end of every day. She started listening to the tapes, and the very next day was amazed at how good she felt. She asked if she could listen at work and they agreed to it. She tells me they think she’s crazy, but she feels so good that she doesn’t care.”

Extra energy, more waking hours Linda Taylor Anderson, Melbourne, Florida, author of Carousing in the Kitchen:

“My friend Patricia didn’t endeavour to convince me to give Sound Therapy a try. It was my own idea. I wanted what she had: extra energy, more waking hours and blessed tranquillity. That is why, as a healthy, functioning person, I incorporated sound therapy into my life.

After less than sixty hours of listening, suddenly, incredibly, new sounds were singing in my ears. I had assumed I’d always heard them, but it is amazing how much we hear, yet do not hear. I am now acutely conscious of sound, all sound, including my own voice which I can now control. Octavizing up or down is now easily accomplished. It is the sound therapy that has gifted me with this new awareness. Further amazement came. When properly energized, the body can function on very little sleep. I have always required eight hours of heavy duty sleep. Now I often wake up in the night, after only three to four hours sleep, snap my eyes open, stretch and feel ready to tackle whatever may be coming my way. I do not always rise to the occasion, preferring the comfort and warmth of the bed. But there is none of the old tossing and turning. I lie peacefully, pursuing my ranging thoughts, making promises and programs for the hours and days to come, as I am now able to concentrate my energy into a basic force that is not easily sidetracked. I see others fade; I am fresh and eager for the next encounter. If I feel the approach of tiredness, I simply lie down for a few minutes with the music and drift into rest, rising calmed, refreshed and ready to carry on.”

A year later Linda writes: “I’m still listening. Not three hours a day but at least 45 minutes. I usually listen at night; when I go to bed, on go the headphones. I go to sleep and the music plays on. When I miss a day I’m not happy about it. I feel something important is lacking. It’s as though my internal batteries that provide calm, energy and a feeling of well-being just hadn’t been charged. I’ll never stop listening. Never is a strong word, but that’s how I feel about sound therapy. I never want to be without it.”

Energy to bake a cake
Anne Sherman, Bayview New South Wales, Australia:

“Although I still have Tinnitus (for which I began the Sound Therapy) I feel sure it isn’t as loud, but the other benefits are great. I am in my 5th month and can now scrape up the energy to make a cake in the late afternoon before I put the dinner on- unheard of for the past many years. My husband of 52 years doesn’t feel he lands himself in nearly the amount of trouble he used to with the crazy male way he tries to help me. I certainly have new vitality and sense of well being which makes it easier for me to tolerate the odd person who used to irritate me!

All in all, I am a very satisfied customer and am in no way going to become lax about my 4 hours each day (I do 4 to make up for the intervals on the tape and the times it stops and I don’t immediately notice).”

Renewed energy for epilepsy sufferer
Hilary Peart, Perth, Western Australia:

“When I first read of Sound Therapy in their newsletter, ‘Listeners’ Voices’ and read of the benefits others had received from listening to their tapes it sounded too good to be true. I thought if I could get a fraction of that help it would be worth trying, so I sent for the tapes and both my husband and I started listening to them as soon as we received them. I have epilepsy and the medication I take was not completely controlling it. I had an almost constant ‘electric’ feeling in my head, and looked out at the world through what seemed like a net curtain, or fog. I was constantly on edge, slept badly, felt exhausted, had difficulty reading and communicating. The simplest tasks had become complicated for me. From the start I listened to the Sound Therapy tapes 10-12 hours a day and found it very soothing. Before I started listening to the tapes my day consisted of about 2 hours of activity in the morning and the rest of the day mainly resting and unable to communicate. By the end of the first three months of listening my day had improved to the extent that I could be active most of the time except for a couple of hours resting in the afternoon. The headaches, pressure in my head and confusion, gradually lessened. After about 6 weeks of listening, I visited my neurologist. He was pleased with my progress and said to carry on with what I was doing. The next visit 6 months later he couldn’t get over how my walking and posture had improved, and I later left the Sound Therapy book with him. On my next visit about 8 months later, he again could see my improvement and was very pleased, and had enjoyed reading the book, as he had an interest in how music can help with restoring memory etc. Today, after about 15 months of listening, what a change! I have my enjoyment and enthusiasm for life back. I have tried many alternative remedies over the years as I have had a number of health issues, I have a heart problem which has culminated in me having a pace-maker fitted, chronic fatigue syndrome, fybromyalgia and of course the epilepsy. I still carry on with acupuncture treatment, homeopathic drops, and magnetic therapy, plus nutritional supplements and have a good diet, all of which have helped me and continue to do so. I was doing this all before I started on the Sound Therapy, but what I found with the Sound Therapy was it seemed to enhance all the other things I was doing. In conclusion Sound Therapy has improved my:

  • Energy levels
  • Co-ordination
  • Memory
  • Concentration
  • Ability to do needlework (I had come to the stage that I was unable to do this any more)
  • Communication – both written and oral
  • Sleeping pattern
  • General quality of life

In short Sound Therapy has given me my quality of life back. Thank you Sound Therapy.”

Bus travel not so tiring
Margaret Owen, Balgowlah, New South Wales, Australia:

“Three days after beginning Sound Therapy I travelled by coach to Brisbane, normally an exhausting procedure, playing the tapes throughout the journey – slept soundly and arrived full of energy into heat wave conditions – spent the afternoon sight seeing at a rapid pace.

The second benefit was being able to cut my sleeping time down to seven hours per night for the first time in my life thus enabling me to get more done. The extra energy has been such a bonus that I don’t care about the acuity of my hearing though I’m sure it’s much improved.

I don’t go anywhere without my Walkman, tapes and battery charger. Even walking round the city is not the exhausting experience it used to be.”

Energy evident in swimming and tennis
Jim Millburn, Balgowlah Heights, New South Wales, Australia:

I was asked to provide written advice regarding my successful use of Sound Therapy in achieving Opening of the Ear. After four weeks of Sound Therapy in which I average daily listening of 3 to 5 hours, I experienced the classic symptoms of Opening of the Ear.

Prior to this, I had gone through the tiredness syndrome without realizing its significance but I recall that my body was just absolutely drained of all energy after having played tonnes one afternoon.

The opening took place shortly after this and was heralded by a strange feeling which overcame me both mentally and physically.

My mind suddenly swept aside all thoughts and became totally clear and focused in a manner that I had never experience previously.

This was accompanied by a surge of energy which built up and charged my whole body, providing sources of energy which became evident in my swimming and tennis.

Over the next few weeks, I found my sense of taste, which had been very poor, say 2 out of 10, improved to 5 out of 10 and I was enjoying my meals far more than before.

My poor concentration also showed considerable improvement to the extent that it was quite evident that something remarkable had taken place.

Now some 8 months down the track, the extent of the change has diminished but I retain the benefits of high energy, good sleeping, a general feeling of vibrant well-being and an ability not to worry unnecessarily.

Better tennis
Allen McNeil, New South Wales, Australia:

“I am amazed at the power of this method, After just six hours I noticed benefit in my energies, and played better tennis.”

Great rushes of energy
Marion Loe, Engadine New South Wales, Australia:

I suppose I am a high anxiety person. That is, I get easily stressed. Several months ago I knew I had to do something. I frantically collected tools to help me meditate and relax. Since using the Sound Therapy tapes my meditations have been a lot deeper and I feel a lot calmer. It’s like I have the mental space to sit back from all the busyness. I don’t have to rescue people. They can look after themselves.

Initially I become extremely tired. That surprised me. Then I remembered in the book by Patricia she also got very tired. That made me feel better so I knew this was a stage in the healing process. I just allowed it to happen. I took a few extra supplements and persevered. Then I started feeling better. In fact I was getting great rushes of energy. Very surprising response – fantastic. Now I feel like I have bigger ears, bigger eyes, my “antennae” are more sensitive. I’ve slowed down and can appreciate the world differently.

Thank you Sound Therapy!

Trebled energy, new notes
Melanie King, singer-composer, Melbourne, Australia:

“I have had some beautiful benefits from using the tapes – trebled energy, less sleep needed, steadier moods, more focused concentration – and I have notes in the top of my vocal range which are brand new.”

P.S., some months later: “My voice continues to soar eaglebound in new ways!”

Never dragged out and tired
Darrell Johnson, Delisle, Saskatchewan, Canada:

“About four years ago I started getting ringing in the left ear, followed by light-headedness and dizziness. Sometimes I couldn’t stand without falling. This I was getting about once a month, then twice a month, soon twice a week and not long later three or four times a day. My doctor told me I had Meniere’s Syndrome, which is a problem of the inner ear past the stirrup. There wasn’t much that could be done; I would just have to put up with it. Being my age was 53, I knew I would be quite some time putting up with this problem. The doctor made some changes in my diet, which helped a little but not much. It was no cure, and I still got the spells. Then I heard about Sound Therapy. I bought the Sony Walkman and tapes on June 15/83. I played it three to five hours a day. It took about ten weeks before I noticed any difference. Now, four months later, I have no light-headedness and dizziness, and the ringing in my left ear has gone. Sometimes I get the feeling that I might get dizzy, and I put on the sound therapy music and the feeling goes away immediately. The hearing in my left ear has also improved. I can’t express how much Sony and the tapes have done for me. I still use my Sony and tapes three to four hours a day, as it is so relaxing, and I am never dragged out and tired any more. I can stay up very late at night and still get up rested early in the morning. Also, I don’t get uptight and stressed about the little setbacks of the day, but can just relax and take them in my stride. I even find it easier to talk to people – am not so shy! It’s like a new life.”

Spring cleaning whirlwind
Wanda S. Harrison, Allen Park, MI, U.S.A.

“I did experience the energy breakthrough. For about a week prior, I had found myself literally at loose ends, unable to make decisions, not really wanting to do ANYTHING. On Tuesday the 17th, I had to force myself to get up at 10:30 a.m. and dragged through the rest of the day and evening. The next morning I awoke feeling like a new person, so full of energy I couldn’t decide what to do first. This is a new experience for me! I simply can’t believe how much energy I have! When we were up at my mother’s old farmhouse in Midland last weekend, I not only cleaned inside the house, but got to work in the yard, pruning the bushes that hadn’t been done for 10 years and finally getting started on the huge task of cleaning up her old garden at the side of the house.

For the first time in many years I am able to lie and go to sleep without taking any pills! This alone makes me feel like a new person, not to be tied to the bottle of tranquilizers at bed time and particularly to wake up after 4-5 hours of sleep feeling totally refreshed and no morning “blahs.”

I also find that I no longer need to use laxatives the way I did for many years since I had abdominal surgery when I was seven. My memory is much clearer as are my thought processes as well as my writing ability.”

Customer service whizz
Bruce Hanwright, Rutherford, New South Wales, Australia:

“As far as benefits of listening to the tape goes I seem to hear words of the rock and roll songs of my youth more clearly (I’m 56) and I seem to handle work better serving rushes of customers.”

Felt so energized
Julia Angel Gulenc, Moorabbin, Victoria, Asutralia:

“About eight years ago, I read an article in a Women’s magazine about the damaging effects of loud noise on our hearing. Sound Therapy was mentioned.

Since I was suffering of frequent ringing in my ears, was very sensitive to noise, with frequent headaches etc., I rang the phone number given on the article.

When your rep. detailed to me the supposed benefits of Sound Therapy naturally I was skeptical, but decided to purchase the book Sound Therapy for the Walkman, to get a better understanding of this therapy.

I read the book in one sitting.

I was so impressed, that immediately after reading it, I purchased the tapes. I have said many times since, that the few hundred dollars I spent buying the tapes was the best investment I ever made for my health. From the very first moment I started listening , I knew they were going to do me good.

I had for a very long time, been very uncomfortable listening to regular tapes with headphones on, as I found it unpleasant no matter how low the sound, It bothered me. Not so with Sound Therapy tapes. As soon as I put the headphones on after only a few minutes, I knew I was onto something different.

I couldn’t get enough. I listened for 6 hours straight. That same night I slept with my headphones on. I was amazed and very pleased.

A few months later, the ringing in my ears, my regular dizzy spells, and my headaches, were largely gone. I felt so energized that I went from needing 8-9 hours sleep a night, to only 7. Many times since, I have woken up feeling fully rested after only 5 or 6 hours of sleep.

Now years later I don’t listen to the tapes every day and I don’t need to, but if I go without them for longer than a fortnight, my ears seem to protest and on come the headphones again.

I do hope that one day I’ll be able to go without the tapes, but as I enjoy the music – especially the hissing; would you believe? – that special sound will continue to be a part, a very important on, of my life.

They have certainly made a great difference to the enjoyment of my life. My ears and I are very grateful.”

Jill Genders,

“I continue to be very pleased with the tapes – and – is it magic, coincidence or is it the tapes? I seem to have so much energy. Whatever it is, I like it.”

Wendy Freeman,

“Hi there from Melbourne! I have just spent 6wks in the US and Canada and of course took my Sound Therapy tapes with me and listened heaps. I really believe they helped me to cope much better then I expected with all the travel, given my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I think I am going to get away without having a relapse, which is wonderful.”

Sarkis Doueihi, Syndey, Australia

“My name is Sarkis Doueihi, I am a personal trainer & full time Athlete (competing in Track and American Football). I studied psychology at California State college Fullerton, and NLP at Master practitioner level with Wyatt Woodsmall & Marvin Oka.

My greatest passion is performance enhancement, to see Human beings becoming and being the absolute best that they can be, whether that be sports, business, family, relationships, or even the spiritual path.

I first came across Sound Therapy while reading Cosmic memory by Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder. The chapter on using the ear to recharge & learn just knocked me out. Firstly, because of its claims, secondly, because of evidence and background, but most importantly, to the extent that it described certain experiences I had experienced. I must have read and re-read the chapter at least three times, then exploded to the back of the book, looking for the resources listings, only to find an address in far off Canada. I didn’t want to wait weeks and weeks to get the tapes. I wanted them now or at least by the next morning. I was sure there had to be an Australian connection.

Funnily enough the next day a catalogue arrived in the mail for the upcoming Mind Body & Spirit festival. As I flicked through, my jaw dropped, there right in front of me was a local phone number for a supplier of the Sound Therapy audio tapes, and they even had a stall at the show.

On the Thursday of the show I rushed straight to the Sound Therapy stall. The cosmic joke was here I met the daughter (Rafaele) of the originator of Sound Therapy for the Walkman (Patricia Joudry) and she lives in Sydney. On that day I picked up the book ”Sound Therapy for the Walkman”. That evening after the festival I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting. Now was I hyped. I wanted these tapes and all the benefits that come with them. I picked up the tapes on the Saturday- I remember it was on the 3rd of December.

In the first week I must have listened to in excess of 70 hours, I was so excited I literally lived with my walkman. It took me about 4 weeks to to hit 300 hours of listening and when it hit me the fatigue was phenomenal. Sitting in front of the TV after a pretty ordinary day, it was only 7.30pm and off I dozed. For the next two weeks it was pretty much the same. I would wake up exhausted, I would fall asleep at the smallest rest break or inactivity. It wasn’t like I couldn’t continue with my daily schedule of training or working, it just took a lot more effort and concentration on my part. I was tired all the time and when I slept, I slept like a rock. Then my ears started to ache, all the dizziness and deep bone soreness! Despite all the fatigue and aches, all the dizziness and confusion, I persisted. I knew there was a pot of gold at the end of this colourless rainbow and I persisted. As suddenly as all the symptoms came, they one by one disappeared, but as each disappeared there was a gift of some new ability.

The fatigue, for example, was not only alleviated, it was totally gone, with energy to burn. There was this new intensity to my workouts, my work had a new spark, and my life felt energised. When the ear aches dispersed there came a new sense of balance and proprioception. There was clarity in my brain, not just in my mind. I had so much energy and more than anything I became totally addicted to my sound therapy tapes. I seemed to feed on them.

About two or three months later I ordered the advanced tapes. I listened to them for about 100 hours before it all started to happen again, but from a higher order, the symptoms came on for only five days this time and the after effect escalated the original by at least four fold. I was so energised, so earful it was great! Like my hearing seemed to get deeper and wider.

And I noticed more than ever how I slept like a baby, totally stress free. Most of all I seemed to be able to feed off all the sound around not only the sound therapy. I was always energised.

What next you ask? Well I tried the Full Spectrum audios and was totally blown away. They have a depth, a dimensionality to them like nothing I have ever heard. To describe them in words almost seems impossible, because to hear them is to go beyond the horizontal mind, into a verticality beyond words.

Sound therapy is performance enhancing, it is life enhancing. If you are after truly getting an edge on yourself then it would pay you handsomely to try the sound therapy experience. Persist through till the end and you will swearing by them too.”

Jenny Cannons

“As a sufferer of Tinnitus and hearing problems, reading about Sound Therapy in the Probus Magazine struck a cord. A ray of hope, a chance to improve my life as I had become withdrawn due to the mentioned problems. As listening hours passed I noticed less tension, less tiredness and 3 months on the tinnitus has eased. There are times when the ‘noises’ are not present. It is quite startling to realize the head is free of interference and when it does return it is not with intensity of the past. My hearing has improved; I had been tested for hearing aids prior to Sound Therapy treatment and would require assistance for both ears. Last month I was tested again and only the right ear needed assistance. This I decided to go with as my life is moving forward again and I miss too much at committee meetings etc. Yes I have become involved in activities again. Thanks to Sound Therapy. Most weeks I averaged 6 hours a day and I am still putting in the average of 4 hours a day and am looking forward to further improvement. Travelling with my tapes is wonderful. An 8 hour train journey was an interesting experiment, I came off the train fresh and bright which is more than I could say for my fellow travellers. I will definitely take them where ever I go. Now when I wake early I don’t switch on the talkback to mask the tinnitus I “plug in” and rest till time to start the day.”

Dr. Cliff Bacchus, Eleuthera, Bahamas:

“I was introduced to the Sound Therapy cassette system in the winter of I983, and began listening to the music on the day that I purchased my Sony Walkman in Miami. I listened for about six hours a day during the first three days, while making my way about through the noise and confusion of that city, and also during the flight back to my island of Eleuthera. After these three days I was aware of an energy and mental clarity such as I had not experienced since before entering University, many years earlier. One notable happening during the first week was that, whereas I had never before had the patience or stamina at the end of a day of seeing patients to play Backgammon with my young daughter, as she constantly pleaded for me to do, I could now spend a whole evening with her at this game, wearing my headphones and listening to the therapy music. Thus, there was an immediate improvement in family harmony. After ten days of listening, there was a change in the character of my dreams. I had had great difficulty in remembering my dreams, while knowing that they usually verged on the nightmarish. Listening to the therapy music for a time before going to sleep, I began having vivid, happy dreams, with the clarity and purity of childhood dreams: sailing away on a Caribbean cruise; flying through the high air from Hawaii to Tahiti. I also remembered the dreams in detail. At the same time, my creative doors flew open. I began rising earlier in the mornings and listening to the music during several hours of creative writing, which preceded my office hours. I now sleep better, think better, write better, and am eager to get all my patients onto Sound Therapy particularly the pregnant women, and the children with learning problems.”

Now I feel like I have bigger ears, bigger eyes, my “antennae” are more sensitive. I’ve slowed down and can appreciate the world differently.

Thank you Sound Therapy!

Trebled energy, new notes

Neuralgia

Neuralgia is pain that follows the path of a nerve. Pain can result from pressure, damage, inflammation or aggravation of the nerves.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is the pain caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve, the largest of the twelve nerves in the cranium. The trigeminal nerve is primarily responsible for sensation in the face and one of its three branches is responsible for the movement of the jaw as well. The trigeminal nerve Has several connections to the ear and ear drum and can be associated with TMJ, (tempero-mandibular joint) pain, ear aches and stuffy ears
One of the major causes of trigeminal neuralgia is the erosion of the nerve sheath which is actually a loss of the myelin covering of the nerve. Some other causes may include compression by an adjacent blood vessel, physical damage by dental or other surgeries, genetic predisposition or rarely, a tumor or multiple sclerosis. Abnormalities usually occur at the inner nerve fibers that carry the sensation.

The trigeminal nerve is similar to other sensory nerves like the sciatic nerve in the spinal region and the pain caused by compression can be as excruciating as sciatica.

Shingles and neuralgia

Shingles is an infection that results from the reactivation of the chickenpox  virus and causes a painful, blistering rash. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a complication of shingles, causing ongoing pain after the rash has cleared. It’s most likely in older people, and causes continuing pain, after the rash from shingles has healed. The pain is caused by scarring of nervous system tissue in the spinal cord. It may be burning, stabbing, or throbbing, and it may affect more areas than the original shingles pain. The pain can occur in response to minor stimuli. Normally painless things (such as the light touch of clothing) can cause pain, and things that would normally cause slight discomfort become extremely painful.

Relief for neuralgia

Natural therapies are often used to relieve neuralgia as it is a difficult condition to treat with standard medicine.
Relief can be achieved through improve circulation, reduced hyperactivity of the cranial nerves, reduced stress, improved myelination, neural plasticity and inhibition of excess excitation. It is proposed that some of these conditions can be supported by the use of Sound Therapy.

Sound Therapy listeners report relief from neuralgia

“I had a major operation on my leg some years ago and ended up with a lot of nerve damage and resulting pain. When I use Sound Therapy I have no pain in that foot and when I don’t use it I do. We know Sound Therapy has a profound effect on the nervous system, so it helps us both emotionally and physically.” Carol King, Massage Therapist
“Shingles on my face had affected the nerves to my face and head and left some inflammation and damage so they were acute to touch with shooting pains in my face, ear and head. This has now gone. When I first started Sound Therapy the condition was greatly stirred up, so I had to go slowly at first, but it was resolved in less than six months.

Gifted Children

Giftedness is traditionally defined as having an IQ higher than 130.  This is manifested as an intellectual capacity beyond that expected for the age of the child.  It also points to having the potential to achieve highly in both childhood and adulthood.

Giftedness may also include a different type of sensory responsiveness. For example, heightened sensitivity to touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste.

The gifted person experiences life events differently to others, and will put their own unique interpretations on life events.  They will have different perceptions of reality and different emotional responses and consequently, are likely to do things differently as well.

This presents challenges in some situations for children in the school system.

Gifted Children and Sound Therapy

Gifted children, and in fact all children, can benefit from Sound Therapy, which is simply a way of providing added stimulus to develop and increase the resilience of the auditory system. It can be used to improve concentration, creative thinking, language skills, sleep, moods, energy levels, and to reduce stress.

Just as children need the stimulation of physical exercise, somersaults, roundabouts, swings and other coordination challenges, they benefit from the stimulation of the vestibular and auditory systems that Sound Therapy provides.

Gifted children and learning difficulties

Some gifted children learn more easily through other senses other than the auditory sense. Because such children may not learn well in a traditional classroom, they can sometimes perform considerably below their mental age. Therefore these children may be classed as learning disabled, may fall behind in their studies and become disruptive in group situations.

However, such problems may be hard to identify. Gifted children usually develop self taught strategies for circumventing their deficit, so do not always demonstrate the typical characteristics of a learning or sensory integration problem.

In the classroom gifted children who have a sensory processing problem will often use visual clues to determine what is required of them. Such children often understand much of the subject matter taught in class, having already studied it using computers or reference books at home. Therefore teachers may not notice that the child is unable to follow their verbal teaching. Children may become clever at guessing what the teacher wants from their prior learning or other observations. Alternatively they may just withdraw from participation into their own world, or exhibit disruptive behaviour.

Sound Therapy has been found to enhance learning and life adjustment for gifted children in the following ways.

• Processing of auditory information improved
• Processing speed improved
• Accurate sound detection – able to discern just noticeable differences in sounds
• Clarity of speech perception and articulation enhanced
• Discrimination of relevant sound form background noise
• Improved memory for complex sound patterns
• Better attention to sound
• Improved coordination and sensory integration

When Sound Therapy brings about change in the basic auditory pathways, the effect has a flow on effect to the higher neural levels, eventually reaching and improving academic abilities.

Sound Therapy has been found to improve not only auditory processing but also motor coordination, visual perception, visual/motor skills and time order processing.

Dyslexia

The problem

Dyslexia, meaning “reading difficulty” was originally called “word blindness” and thought to be a visual problem. One of the earliest writers on the subject, Dr Hinshelwood, was an eye surgeon, which may account for the initial emphasis on visual difficulties. Many more recent studies point to language and auditory problems as the fundamental cause. Listening is the most basic skill required for verbal communication and a weakness in listening ability may hinder the development of a strong language base. Consequently, the child encounters problems when it comes time to approach the more complex linguistic tasks of writing and reading. If the sounds of speech have not been accurately heard, they cannot be accurately conveyed by symbols. The left hemisphere of the brain is the main centre for processing language. In order for speech sounds to reach the brain efficiently the right ear must take a leading role in listening because the right ear communicates most directly with the left hemisphere. Dr Tomatis contends that children with dyslexia have failed to achieve right ear dominance and that therefore the order in which they hear sounds becomes jumbled. If they sometimes use the left and sometimes the right ear as the directing ear, sounds may reach the brain at different speeds, so letters will be jumbled. This accounts for errors of reversal, such as writing “was” as “saw” or pronouncing “spaghetti” as “pisghetti”.

How Sound Therapy may help

The balance between the two hemispheres of the brain is of fundamental importance in overcoming dyslexia.

Both hemispheres play a role in processing language, but the roles they play are different. The eye must combine with the power and the quality of the ear to make sense of the written sounds. This co-ordination happens easily when the left hemisphere deals primarily with audition and the right hemisphere deals primarily with vision. In dyslexia, the route which allows for phonic analysis has been damaged. Sound Therapy may help restore the functioning of this route and reduce the cause of the problem. Tomatis says “We read with our ears … the ear is the organ of language, the pathway to language assimilation, the key that controls it, the receptor regulating its flow.” Sound Therapy may help stimulate and exercise the ear, encouraging it to receive and interpret sound in an efficient manner. Music is a highly organised series of sounds that the ear has to analyse. Therefore, listening to music is an excellent way for a child to learn how to perceive sounds in an organised fashion, or in other words, to listen. The higher volume of sound to the right ear, which is built into all Sound Therapy recordings, means that the right ear is encouraged to become the directing ear. When this right ear dominance is achieved, the problem of reversal will likely disappear.

The added benefits of confidence and self esteem

Children with dyslexia often have feelings of inferiority after repeated failure. It is unfair that they must try many times harder than anyone else to achieve only mediocre results. Sound Therapy may offer immediate emotional relief because it is a method of treatment that requires no extra effort from the child. A therapy that does not require the child to struggle with the problem area of language enables him or her to feel let off the hook for once and enjoy a treatment that is not a constant reminder of his or her own inadequacies. The basic cause of the language difficulties may be remedied by Sound Therapy. Once the child is able to receive and interpret sound accurately and easily, his or her ability and motivation to communicate is greatly increased. Thus the problem learner is transformed into a receptive and motivated learner.

How to use it

A child with dyslexia should listen to Sound Therapy every day for 30 to 60 minutes or more if desired. Listening can be done during sleep, play, homework or travel. If the child wishes to listen at school, parents can ask for the consent of the teacher. This will likely be granted as listening in the classroom will often help the child to concentrate and perform better. The reading aloud exercise while holding an imaginary microphone in the right hand has been particularly helpful for children with dyslexia.

Reading aloud exercise

Children who are experiencing difficulty with reading can begin this exercise after the first ten to twenty hours of listening. The child sits in an erect but comfortable posture and reads aloud while holding the right hand near the mouth, as though holding an imaginary microphone. This has the psychological effect of ‘switching on’ the voice. At the same time it encourages right ear dominance, which is necessary for the successful conversion of visual symbols into sound. This exercise should be done for fifteen minutes each day, and can be continued until the reading problems are resolved. Encourage the child by making it into a fun game. Give your child positive attention while he or she is reading and this will create a positive association with reading aloud.

Attention Deficit ADD/ADHD

The problem

Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder is a congenital problem which affects 20% of boys and 8% of girls. It is believed to be caused by a deficiency in the transmission system which relays messages between cells in various parts of the brain. The majority of children with ADD/ADHD have auditory reception problems. Although they can hear, they have difficulty making sense of what they hear. They cannot tune out unwanted input and focus on selected sounds. It is this indiscriminate reception of auditory input which leads to the inability to concentrate their attention on a selected topic for any length of time. Poor functioning of the frontal lobe means the child cannot think quickly enough to put the brakes on and control the impulse to act. This impulsiveness and hyperactivity also leads to behavioral problems and poor social skills.

How Sound Therapy may help

By stimulating the frontal lobe, Sound Therapy may restore the child’s ability to think quickly and put the brakes on before acting. It may also retrain the listening capacity or the auditory reception process, so that the child can learn to focus on the desired sound and to relay the sound directly to the language centre in the brain. Auditory reception problems are caused, in part, by the shutting down of the ear to certain frequencies of sound. The ear muscles become lazy and unresponsive and must be stimulated in order to regain the capacity to tune into the desired sound. Sound Therapy has been shown to help provide this rehabilitation for the ear and may help to re-organise the auditory transmission in the brain. This process helps to reduce stress and tension in the whole nervous system as the child becomes able to attend to a chosen stimulus instead of being constantly distracted by every sound in the environment.

How to use it

Regular listening to Sound Therapy is essential to receive successful results. The child should listen every day if possible for between 30 and 60 minutes. If it is possible to get the child to listen for longer than this each day, that will be even more beneficial. It may be difficult to persuade a child with ADD to sit still and listen – and although there is nothing wrong with listening on a personal cassette player while moving around, a child which is hyperactive may put the machine at risk! Some parents have found they have more success in getting children with ADD to listen during sleep. If the child is a restless sleeper, the mini phones can be taped in to the ear with surgical tape, or you can use headphones that clip around the back of the ear. Be sure to place the headphone marked R in the right ear. For listening during sleep, the music tapes are most suitable.

There is nothing wrong with offering incentives to get the child to listen. The promise of a reward once the child has done say, 100 hours of listening may prove effective in some cases.

What it achieves

Very dramatic results may be achieved with Sound Therapy for children with ADD. The first change you may observe could be a marked decrease in activity (for overactive children) while under active children may become more energized. As listening discrimination is re-trained, memory and concentration improve so that learning can be achieved with a great deal less effort. Sleep and appetite problems are resolved as the whole system becomes calmer and less erratic. The behavioural difficulties, such as impulsiveness and aggression are now brought down to a manageable level. The child may now be able to pay attention in class, understand and follow instructions and be motivated to communicate and learn.

Accelerate Potential

Accelerate your child’s potential

Sound Therapy is recommended for all children including highly gifted children, and will assist the development of good learning and study abilities, just as exercise helps to develop balance, strength and muscular co-ordination. The ear and the auditory cortex are vitally important centers for learning, communication and higher brain function. Sound Therapy is an easy way to input a very positive stimulus that will help to maximize your child’s potential.

Today children need extra support to develop their auditory function because they are affected by many detrimental environmental factors. The world is noisier than ever, so child’s ears are bombarded with a lot of loud and damaging sounds before they have fully developed. Environmental toxins also lead to poor immunity, infections and sensitivities which impact on many children’s development. Sound Therapy is the perfect brain training program to complement good nutrition, good education and a loving environment. The complex rhythms and harmonies of classical music train the brain to think conceptually and improve intelligence. This effect is augmented by the special filtering used in the recordings.

Sound Therapy for the Learning Disabled Child

Summary of research by Elizabeth & Derek Rintel, 1995

SOUND THERAPY FOR THE LEARNING DISABLED CHILD: The Effect of High Fequency Filtered Music on Listening and Learning Ability

A group of Remedial Learning Children were exposed to Joudry Sound Therapy Tapes for 32 hrs over a period of sixteen weeks. The results were as follows:

Goldman-Fristoe-Woodcock Test of Auditory Discrimination

(in percentiles for age group)

Rosner Test of Auditory Analysis Skills

Neale Reading Age Group Means (in months)

Neale Comprehension Age Group Means (in months)

Spelling Age Group Means (in months)

Some comments from the discussion paper:

“we can conclude that the change was due to the high frequencies in the Joudry tapes.”

“Experienced teachers consider an increase of five months in reading in four months is good progress for a remedial child.”

“it is unusual for a group to make ten months gain in the period studied.”

“the children who received the high frequency music showed more rapid advances”

“For Special children being integrated into the classroom it is entirely feasible for an individual child to wear a Walkman player with the tapes while attending to lessons in the normal way. It is clear that larger group studies would be worthwhile especially in view of the policy of integrating as many disadvantaged children as possible into the normal school. Sound Therapy may allow them to speed up the learning process.”
