Abstract

This paper contrasts and compares Sound Therapy based on discoveries by Dr Tomatis to music therapy, meditation, and various tinnitus treatments including masking, habituation retraining and intermittent masking with music. Tomatis based, Joudry Sound Therapy, has been found to have a more profound effect on ear function and the brain and nervous system for several reasons. It uses the power of classical music. It rehabilitates the middle ear via muscular exercise, it stimulates the brain with concentrated high frequency input and it reorganises brain pathways in a beneficial way by training the listener to be right ear dominant. A review of the clinical evidence points to the efficacy of the Joudry method particularly for the treatment of tinnitus.

Premise
Joudry Sound Therapy is an effective treatment for tinnitus because it directly stimulates the ear mechanism in such away as to improve both the mechanical, muscular function of the middle ear and the sensorineural function of the cochlea. It also activates many brain centres simultaneously, thus promoting the creation of new brain connections and better neural integration between auditory centres as well as integration with other sensory pathways.

Definition and Scope of Joudry Sound Therapy
Joudry Sound Therapy is a treatment system based on the discoveries of the ENT Dr Alfred Tomatis. New treatment protocols and improved algorithms have advanced the therapy to render it more potent in the treatment of tinnitus and other ear related problems.

Background research

Music Therapy. Extensive evidence exists for the efficacy of music therapy in altering stress, mood states and assisting with a range of health disorders. In particular the music of Mozart has proven beneficial in assisting mood and also stimulating neurological connections and improving intelligence and short term memory.

Tinnitus – is learning to live with it still the best answer?
Because no suitable drug therapy has been found for tinnitus there is a tendency to accept that the condition is untreatable. However stimulation and retraining methods have been found to deliver relief for the majority and in some cases total recovery.

Masking. Tinnitus masking was discovered in 1977 by Jack Vernon who observed that an external sound is easier to tolerate than an internal sound and went on to develop specialised devices for masking tinnitus. While helpful to some sufferers, this method was found effective in providing temporary relief only.

Habituation theory. In the 1980s Dr Pawell Jastreboff and Dr Jonathan Hazel, developed the theory of habituation which holds that tinnitus only becomes a problem if the limbic system is activated and the patient associates the tinnitus with stress or another negative emotion. Jastreboff developed Tinnitus Retraining Therapy which uses counselling and sound generators to train the patient not to pay attention to the tinnitus.

This method has gained wide acceptance in the audiology profession. It provides a measure of relief but requires a fair time commitment, and cost, as subjects must attend a course of training to learn the method.

Intermittent masking. In the 1990s a program was developed by Dr Paul Davis and marketed under the brand name Neuromonics. This program delivers a more tailored form of masking which has proved more palatable as it is delivered via music, giving an intermittent effect at a level tailored for the patient. However, the cost is prohibitive for many tinnitus sufferers. The efficacy of this method has not been verified by independent research.

Ear rehabilitation. Dr Tomatis’s discoveries provide a unique approach wherein ear function is rehabilitated using classical music processed with particular algorithms to create a stimulating effect for the ear. His work has been largely overlooked in the audiological field due to the fact that the short term treatment possible in the clinic setting was usually insufficient to produce the needed changes to affect tinnitus. However, the portable program developed by Joudry uses a different protocol which allows for more intensive, long term treatment, and is now proving to be highly effective in this area.

The improvements made to the Joudry program include:

  1. Portability, meaning greater access and ease of long term listening
  2. A more active musically responsive algorithm used in mastering
  3. Audio-visual support materials to increase listener motivation and compliance
  4. Convenience of use as listening can be done during daily activities or sleep

The physiological basis of Sound Therapy
Dr Tomatis in the 1950s invented a method of Sound Therapy where the frequencies in classical music are altered to provide a physical stimulus for the ear as well as the brain.

Tomatis advanced some radical ideas about the ear and nervous system for which he was acclaimed during his lifetime by the French academies of medicine and science. Several of his theories were tested and confirmed at the Sorbonne University. His premises, established through clinical observation included the following:

Efferent impulses activate the ear
The middle ear mechanism is an active organ which responds via efferent nerve stimulus to incoming sounds. While generally thought of as passive, the middle ear muscles tend to be ignored in seeking remedial solutions for ear problems. Their only recognised role is generally the impedance of loud sound, which could damage the ear. However, Weeks and Richards through investigating the role of the cranial nerves and efferent impulses arising within the Superior Olivary Complex in the brain stem, confirmed that there is a voluntary and proactive component to our hearing. In fact it appears that we are continually tuning the middle ear in order to focus on sounds that we deem to warrant our attention.

Sound can improve ossicular performance
The middle ear muscles can be activated by alternating high and low tones, leading to permanent improvement of their functioning. Tomatis made this discovery after many hours of clinical experimentation with his filtering device, the Electronic Ear. Though more interested himself in psychological aspects of hearing, and in treating autism and dyslexia, he laid the foundation for others to exploit his breakthrough for “ear physiotherapy.”

High frequencies reactivate the cilia
Moving through to the cochlea, Tomatis found that presenting the ear with increasing high frequency sound enhances the capacity of the ear to respond to high frequencies. He developed a program which progressively increases the high frequency content of the sound, increasing both tolerance and capacity for frequencies of 8,000Hz and above. Standard medical advice holds that if the cilia are damaged by noise or infection, they have most likely been destroyed and no improvement in hearing can eventuate. This has been called into question by a growing body of evidence that listening to the Joudry Sound Therapy, (an extended version of Tomatis) sometimes results in significant hearing improvement for sufferers of sensorineural hearing loss. This can only be explained by the premise that the hair cells in some instances were not destroyed but only damaged, and that the repeated stimulation by gradually increasing high frequencies helped to reactivate them.

Better ear function increases appreciation of sound
Tomatis asserted that the ear can be re-trained to receive a greater range of sound by repeated stimulus to “exercise” the middle ear muscles. Listeners to the Joudry method frequently confirm this finding by observing that their appreciation of sound improves, musical and vocal ability improve and they are able to hear birdsong and appreciate music in a new way. Along with this, following a conversation becomes easier, they can hear better in different environments and many report being able to turn down the TV so they can listen without annoying the rest of the family.

The right leads language integration
Tomatis discovered that singing, speaking and all language skills are enhanced by ensuring right ear emphasis, which creates a shorter, more direct brain route for processing sound in the left hemisphere. While it is generally accepted that the primary processing centre for language is on the left, no one apart from Tomatis has used this knowledge to create a simple, auditory remedial program for laterality confusion and the resulting learning and language problems. Tomatis discovered this phenomenon by accident when working with singers who he found greatly improved their vocal range, control and fluency when monitoring themselves with the right as opposed to the left ear. He found that subjects could be trained to be right ear dominant by consistently supplying louder sound to the right ear.

High frequency bombardment improves brain energy and integration
Perhaps the most groundbreaking of Tomatis’s discoveries was that intensified high frequency sounds, primarily in the range of 8,000 to 16,000 Hz, consistently supplied, serve to stimulate and enhance brain function. This has implications for a wide range of brain disorders from depression to epilepsy, but also explains the benefit of the method to stress, anxiety and general wellbeing. Tomatis said that the brain needs to receive 3 to 4 billion stimuli per second for at least 4 ½ hours per day in order to function at optimum potential. Various forms of brain stimulation have been looked at for their therapeutic impact on dystonia, stroke rehabilitation, depression and chronic pain. By using classical music with augmented high frequencies, Tomatis found a way, via the auditory system, of making brain stimulus more acceptable and universally beneficial to the nervous system.

Supporting evidence for Tomatis’s discoveries
Enhanced Brain states.
Davidson of Madison University has studied the ability of humans to create and maintain positive emotional states and has integrated Western medical investigation with the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism by engaging in extensive enquiries with the Dalai Lama and other leading Tibetan lamas. Davidson’s research shows that certain centres in the left hemisphere of the brain, which are activated by meditation, contribute to more positive emotional states. This corroborates Tomatis’s discovery that stimulating the left hemisphere via the right ear emphasis produces beneficial results.

Classical music. Tomatis and Joudry Sound Therapy are delivered through classical music that has been altered to enrich the high frequencies, provide a right ear emphasis and present the ear with constantly alternating sounds of high and low tones in a particular algorithm, using Tomatis’s purpose made filtering system, the Electronic Ear. Western classical music is most suitable for this system due to the fact that it uniquely combines complex rhythm, melody and harmony to a greater degree than any other form of music, thereby stimulating numerous parts of the brain at one time. This is believed to enhance brain connectivity by causing connections to be formed by many diverse regions of the brain. Through experimentation Tomatis established that classical music was the most suitable type of music to use for Sound Therapy. The clinic based Tomatis method was used extensively to treat dyslexia, autism and a variety of listening or auditory processing disorders.

Tomatis research. A variety of beneficial effects of the Tomatis method have been recorded in research at specialised clinics in South Africa, Canada and Australia. These include benefits for dyslexia, anxiety and depression, language disorders, stuttering, mental retardation, learning difficulties, vocal quality and tinnitus.

Ear disorders showing improvement. The Tomatis method was made portable in 1984 by the Joudrys, so longer-term treatment became feasible as cost and convenience were dramatically improved. This led to evidence that on-going Sound Therapy can assist in certain cases with a number of ear related problems not previously considered treatable. These include various types of hearing loss: sensorineural, acquired hearing loss, industrial deafness, age related hearing loss and conductive hearing loss for which there is often a muscular component. They also include blocked ear, hyperacusis (sound sensitivity) cocktail party syndrome (difficulty hearing in a noisy room) and tinnitus (ringing in the ears.)

Data has been gathered for these effects through extensive written testimonials, surveys and clinical observations by some 200 allied health practitioners who recommend the method.

Evidence of success with tinnitus
There is extensive clinical evidence for the portable Tomatis (Joudry) method in the form of surveys, case histories and in depth interviews with clients.

A survey of Sound Therapy listeners found that 90% of tinnitus sufferers benefited from the method in that it reduced stress, anxiety and sleeplessness associated with the tinnitus. 45% experienced a reduction in the noise level and 7% found their symptoms were completely gone. Of hearing loss sufferers, 56% reported improvement. Improvements were observed through changes on audiograms, decreased volume required on Walkman or TV, being able to hear better in noisy environments, on the phone or when the speaker had their back turned. Such changes made a significant difference to the person’s life.

Numerous practitioners from various fields including musicians, psychologists, medical doctors and audiologists have become advocates and as independent practitioners actively promote and recommend the method.

Eric Jordan, a UK based audiometrician treated 200 to 300 tinnitus patients over a 2 year period and observed that 90% of patients benefited. Though not a formal study, this nevertheless constitutes objective, clinical observation of patients using the method in their day to day lives by a pracitioner interested and experienced in the tinnitus field.

As most of these results have been gathered from qualitative measures of actual clinical applications, including the personal reports from the clients on the impact on their lives, they are more informative than single quantitative measures from controlled research situations. More extensive research is needed to determine more precise statistics for the potential results in each category of hearing disorder. However, the information gathered so far leaves no doubt that Sound Therapy is beneficial to most people suffering from a hearing related complaint and that in many instances it can be quite life changing. The affordability of this method makes it a very favourable and low risk option for tinnitus sufferers when compared to other treatments available.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is thought to be related to irregular levels of dopamine. Too much dopamine is associated with hallucinations and paranoia, while too little dopamine in the frontal lobes is linked to depression and the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Several areas of the brain are involved in the production of dopamine, and many varied disorders are related to its irregularity.

The condition is thought to be linked with missing ‘balancing’ mechanisms between the left and right halves of your brain. Prior studies revealed structural differences in patients. More recent studies show a healthy brain emphasises sound from the right ear,  as a kind of ‘dominant ear’. Scientists believe schizophrenic sufferers lack this dominance of the right ear and the associated sound-processing-center in the left half of the brain.

Sound Therapy may assist in regulating the production of dopamine and other neurotransmitters, which would account in part for its positive effect on many mood related disorders. While no controlled studies have been done on Sound Therapy for schizophrenia, individual reports have indicated that it could have very beneficial effects in some cases.

Brain Damage

After a brain damage caused by injury there is always a chance of recovery to varying degrees. Sound Therapy is an intervention which may increase the probability of a faster and more total recovery. The sooner it is introduced after the injury or stroke, the greater the likelihood of healing. Some stroke patients who use Sound Therapy have been seen to make an unexpectedly quick recovery, often with functioning returned to a surprisingly high level.

After brain damage the brain is faced with having to develop new pathways or reroute information to compensate for the damaged area. Sound Therapy may be effective in helping to create new brain pathways and reforming essential connections between more distant parts of the brain. The complex, multilayered harmonic and melodic information within the classical music stimulates many parts of the brain, helping to engender a form and structure which assists with various forms of sensory processing.

Sound Therapy may improve integration in the cerebellum, an area near the brain stem which controls many automatic functions and overall sensory and motor integration. The filtering which causes sudden bursts of high frequency sound may stimulate increased firing of neurons. When a neuron fires, it sends a message to other neurons in both chemical and electrical form. Often the process of firing off a message also creates new interneuronal connections called dendrites or axons. This means that using Sound Therapy may build new brain connections, increasing the neural network, exactly what is needed to recover from a stroke.

Reading without Ritalin
Judy and Gerrit Westerhof, Winnipeg:

“Our son John is in Grade 6 and showing terrific improvement in reading since beginning on the Sound Therapy tapes two months ago. He says a lot of people don’t even know he is dyslexic anymore. His teachers are amazed and thrilled, and even his friends have noticed the change in him. John came home last week and reported that two boys said, ‘Boy, John, you’re a lot smarter this year. Last year you were so dumb, but this year you’re not.’ We are so excited, because last year John was in a special program and this year he is in the regular program. He was on medication for his learning disability, but is now off the Ritalin. It makes him especially happy that he doesn’t have to take the pills anymore, as they made him sick to his stomach. He loves the baroque music, listening with his Auto-Reverse Walkman all night until the batteries run out. He hated to read before, and now when we have our evening devotions he asks to read and does it very well. It is like a miracle and he improves daily. His grandfather says it’s like an alarm went off in his head and he woke up.”

ADD calm in class
Mary Ann Scherr – Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada:

“My son Aaron, aged 10, was diagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder, formally Hyperkinetic Syndrome. In December I read about Sound Therapy and the possibilities of this helping hyperactive children. We purchased the tapes at Easter, and Aaron started therapy. A week and a half later, at a teacher interview, his teacher remarked that he was so much more calm and pleasant. She said “I had my first decent religion class because Aaron didn’t butt in and interrupt. Is he on medication or what?” I confessed that Aaron had started Sound Therapy but I didn’t think it necessary to tell the teachers. “Whatever it is,” she said, “keep it up, because whatever it’s doing is helping him.” Two weeks later I asked the teacher if Aaron could listen to the tapes during school. Now he takes his Walkman to school and does his three hours in the a.m. All around, Aaron is much more relaxed with himself and with others. Because of his attitude I have been able to introduce new foods into his diet to determine which food groups he is really sensitive to. With Aaron’s new positive approach, his life can only get better.”

Better grades Mrs Joyce Saben, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada:

“Our son has been on the Sound Therapy program for two years and it has helped him to overcome his learning disabilities. He started off listening all day and all night to complete his first 300 hours. He is allowed to listen to the tapes in his classes at school. His letter grade at school has increased from a C to where he is now on the B Plus Honour roll. It happened that he was asked to give a testimony in a court case about the experience of having dyslexia, and he ended up telling the Judge all about his experience with Sound Therapy to the great interest of the Judge!”

Reports from students at St. Peter’s Vocational School, Saskatchewan, Canada:

After a few months of listening to the cassettes on portable cassette players issued by the school: Susan Stroeder:

“I enjoyed this therapy and learned to pay more attention in school. I wake up easier in the morning – my Mom doesn’t have to call me anymore. I don’t have to ask questions twice, but hear things the first time.” Kyle Bauer

“I don’t get headaches now and am much more active.” Marian Niekamp

“Don’t need as much sleep and am not tired in the mornings. My speaking is much clearer.” Keith Carroll

“It made me much more calm and relaxed.” Lyle Witt

“My right ear seems to bug me when I listen to hard rock now.” Debbie Nagy

“I’ve been listening to the Walkman for over 600 hours. I find it very relaxing. I can sleep a lot better at nights. I wake up more easily in the mornings and find myself in better moods. I don’t mind listening to it at school, and on weekends I try to get as many hours as I can. I find I can study a lot better and I’m more prepared for tests. I’m really enjoying the classical music.” Carla Gaunt

A brain-damaged, mentally handicapped teenager in Saskatoon, has been doing Sound Therapy for the past three months and loves listening to the tapes. Her parents report that there has been a great improvement in her ability to handle stress; her speech has developed and also her recall of past events.

ADHD concentration and self esteem
Liz Rayner, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia:

“I thought I would take this opportunity to thank you both for your time and effort. It is rare these days to find a business that is so prompt, giving it kind.

My son Jason, has benefited greatly from the use of the Sound Therapy tapes and the nutritional supplements for his ADHD. Jason listens to the tapes mainly at night and has never complained or not wanted to listen to them. He settles a lot easier and quicker within 10mins. Then there is the ‘miracle of the supplements for the ear and brain. I say miracle because Jason’s behaviour was of great concern and stress for our family. If I had not seen the differences in my child, I would have thought that this was a gimmick. However, it’s not. My son is less aggressive, calmer, less fidgety, able to concentrate better and more centred.

His behaviour in the school classroom has improved immensely and his schoolwork is steadily improving along with his self-esteem and confidence.

It is evident through the positive changes my son has experienced that even after a short period of using the tapes and natural ADHD remedy (2months) it is beneficial.

My husband and I send you a heartfelt thankyou for all your help and time. Words cannot express the relief and gratitude we feel with finally finding a natural solution for our son.”

Autism – learning to read
Felisa Mendiola, Philippines:

“It has been almost 4 years now since you sent us your Sound Therapy kit (for my autistic son, Ramon Victorino.) Although we can hardly quantify the results brought about by this Sound Therapy, my son who is now 9 years old is beginning to read. Again, thank you so much. Know that your help will always be remembered.”

Reports from students at Quaama public school, New South Wales, Australia:

9 yo girl: “I can play handball better now. I can read properly. It helps me think properly. I feel free inside. My stomach’s not tied up in knots any more. Julia, Julia, I can tell the time now!”

9 yo girl: “It doesn’t sound like I’m under water all the time anymore.”

10 yo girl: “It reduces anxiety and stress before swimming carnivals and overnight excursions.”

10 yo girl: Feels much more confident. Participated in talent quest for the first time.

12 yo boy: Settled him down. He had had some nightmares since his grandmother passed away a few months earlier. After a few weeks was able to talk about his grandmother. It was a great relief.

Severe Speech Dyspraxia
Janice, mother of a child with Dyspraxia:

“My son Jamie was diagnosed, at age three, as having “Severe Speech Dyspraxia.” This disorder, I was told, would mean years of intensive speech therapy. I started Jamie on Sound Therapy and found after a short time his progress with his speech therapy increased. Jamie used Sound Therapy for three months and continued speech therapy for another year. I firmly believe that without the Sound Therapy his progress would have been much slower.”

A D H D – 90% improvement
Annette Imms, New Zealand:

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for ever to my Mum, my sister, Lesley Best (Sound Therapy Distributor) and friends for your countless hours of listening, offering advice, and amazing gift of caring. I love and thank you all.

I am married with two children, Sarah age 11 and Cayden age 7. When Sarah was 6 yrs old, she was diagnosed with ADHD. At this time, I had no knowledge of any other children with ADHD and felt very alone in our journey. My husband and I began to work with teachers, search for HELP regarding diet info, natural products and counselling. We have had a bumpy 4 years together, and at times almost not together (If you know what I mean). One and a half years later after trying several herbal products including omega 3 oils, we decided to trial Ritalin. While Ritalin has helped Sarah to have the ability to concentrate, learn in the school environment, and achieve above average reading, readable writing and above average maths, I have never been at ease with it. The guilt of having your beautiful, fun loving, creative daughter on psychiatric drugs daily has been heavy on our hearts and minds. I am not against Ritalin; I’m not saying that it’s wrong; I’m saying that it’s hard. I have been longing for the right solution, for us. I must say that we have also tried dietary changes and are now focusing mainly on synthetic sugars, colour, dairy and preservatives. A naturopath helped us the most with this. I know this sounds impossible however I find small steps best, so we do our best to keep all of these things at an absolute minimum. I now know that Sarah is an Indigo child and her vibrant personality and creativity are some of her unique strengths and she will achieve her own goals.

Sarah is 11 now and about two months ago Lesley told me about Sound Therapy. Like everything we have tried, I spoke to Sarah about it and we decided together that she would try it. WOW!!!!! Sarah listens to her tapes at bedtime and falls asleep listening to them. We noticed within weeks that her hyper times had become less and she was a much more pleasant person to be around in the mornings and evenings (outside Ritalin hours). Now that Sarah had listened for at least 100 hours, we took her off her Ritalin. Before sound therapy, 5 days without Ritalin would make for an explosive, stressful and upsetting household for all. Sarah would become excessively emotional and at times uncontrollable. Well, it’s been 10 days and Sarah is 90% better. She has very “normal” moments of conflict and upset. She is eating more and I am enjoying her bubbly personality more frequently. I say to you, if you are looking for information, guidance and help with any of your family or yourself, I’m here to tell you first hand that this has worked for us.”

Longer sentences
Mrs. Marjorie Karpan, Keneston, Saskatchewan, Canada:

“I have noticed a remarkable change in my child’s speech. The results were tremendous. The child is speaking in longer sentences, with more detail in speech. I am convinced that Sound Therapy really WORKS!”

ADHD calm and mellow
Brandy Graham – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

“My five year old son, Quannah, has always been very hyperactive with an energy that just bounces off the walls. He also showed a lot of anger. I obtained the Sound Therapy story tapes, and let him listen to these for an hour or so each day – letting him feel it was a privilege, and in no way forcing the therapy on him. In about two weeks there was a noticeable change in his behaviour. He became very quiet and calm, and somehow mellow – and he also seemed much happier. When he contracted the measles, I let him have the Walkman and the stories to listen to in bed, and there was great improvement in his sleep pattern. Some time later, when he caught an ear infection at a public swimming pool, and was in a lot of pain and distress, I again played the story tapes for him, and the pain went out of his ears. I’m sure the Sound Therapy was responsible for his rapid healing.”

Dyslexia – getting smarter!
Pat Engbers, RN – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada:

“My son, Marty, was diagnosed as dyslexic and has had special education since Grade 1. He started using the Sound Therapy tapes during Grade 8. School authorities, counsellors and special education teachers, on evaluating Marty after the first Grade 8 term, were all of the opinion that he would be unable to complete the grade because of his problems (lack of reading comprehension, inattention, short-term memory difficulties). However, we were able to persuade them to keep him in his present school and to give the tapes a chance to work. Marty used the tapes overnight, every night for nine months, and he himself reported improved hearing and concentration after about three weeks. The best news of all came after six weeks when he came home from school very excitedly and said, “you know, those tapes are making me smarter! I was half way through an essay this morning and realised that I had actually heard and understood the teacher. I knew the answers and it was easy to write them down!” From then on, even though Marty never became a scholar, his previously strained expression grew happy and relaxed. His ability to deal with Math and English improved greatly. He left school after Grade 10, and is now working at a full-time job and has no trouble at all with the math and language skills he needs. I should add that our other son, David, also used the tapes, for improved concentration and memory. After a few weeks we noticed that his very bent back had straightened right up – and has stayed that way.”

Better sleep no nightmares
Helen Hill – Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

“Our eleven year old son reports that he “never slept better in his whole life.” He had been troubled with terrible nightmares. He now will not part with, nor go to bed without Tape # 1 in your program. Thank you so much.”

Brain damage
Mrs Joe Bentley

“Our daughter had a bicycle accident last spring, smashed her head on the pavement, and had two fractures to the head as well as brain concussion. The diagnosis was that she would never speak, walk, or have a memory. A friend sent her the first four Sound Therapy tapes, and she gradually learned to listen to them. She enjoys the music, as she is a pianist, and at the end of five weeks she could play the piano and read music, though she couldn’t yet read a book. I read the Sound Therapy book to her. Now six months later, she can read slowly, and can do everything except communicate fully. I am sending for another tape, as they have done so much for her. We thank you for all the help you have given our daughter.”

Posture picks up
Maureen Boyko, Watson, Saskatchewan, Canada:

“Our son, Mitch, is going to St. Peter’s Pre Vocational Centre in Muenster. He has been listening to Sound Therapy tapes on an Auto-Reverse Walkman in school since he started there in Sept. of 84, and we’ve had them at home since our purchase in April 85, two months ago. Sister Miriam, one of Mitch’s teachers and also principal of the school, said she has noticed a real change in Mitch in the final two months of the school year. My husband and I have noticed a real difference as well. His posture has improved. He used to walk really slouched. We’re not reminding him to stand straight nearly as often. He is more relaxed; he speaks out more clearly and more often. He used to speak so softly and did not articulate his words clearly. He feels that he has much better sleep, listening to the tapes. And last but not least he has developed a real appreciation of classical music.”

Senses get clearer
Larissa Amy, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia:

“Larissa Amy was diagnosed with ADD and Higher Functioning Autism. This is her response to Sound Therapy in her own words at age 13.

“My pain is not as sharp and my sleep is less. The colours are beautiful. They stand out heaps and are richer and brighter. Reading – there are more gaps in between the letters. They stand out even more. This has helped a lot for me. Life is so much easier now. But of course I feel like a new person. The world has changed a lot.”

Hearing impaired children
Donalda Alder, Long Beach, CA, U.S.A.

“The children’s poetry tape has been a Godsend for my hearing impaired students. They love it! Their attention spans have increased dramatically since they have been listening regularly to the tape. My one very hyperactive youngster has settled down to her schoolwork because she knows she can listen to the tape as soon as she’s finished. The tape has become a reward!

It’s amazing to me that for the 35 years that I have been teaching hearing impaired children, this is the first auditory training tape that uses only speech to which the children can listen comfortably. Patricia’s speech is articulate and soothing. You have chosen the poems carefully so that they are amusing and hold the children’s interest as well.”

Schizophrenia
Reba F. Adams, RN – Dallas, Texas, USA:

“The psychiatrist told me, “Your daughter is a schizophrenic and always will be.” At the age of sixteen she underwent a complete personality change as a result of a severe hypoglycaemic attack, and a fall in which she struck her forehead on a file cabinet. From being active and popular, with a wonderful sense of humour, she became irritable and suspicious, dropped her friends and became a regular recluse. She would not talk on the phone nor eat at the table, but took her meals to her room to eat behind closed doors. Her co-ordination was poor, very mechanical, like a doll. She became unable to sleep and would go days without even an hour’s sleep. That was ten years ago. She has been doing Sound Therapy for six months and is better in so many ways I hardly know where to begin. She will initiate conversations again, and occasionally I hear her deep joyous laughter that I have missed so much these past years. She is calmer, and has obtained her driver’s licence, she has started work on her education, with the assistance of a tutor provided through a special program, and she wears a Walkman to class. The Walkman is worn from the time she gets up until bedtime every day. She has come so far that I really cannot say enough about this wonderful therapy.”

Testimonials

    Testimonials on blocked ear/sinus

Katie Fitzgerald, Sydney , Australia :

My problem was that I had a blocked ear, it wasn’t blocked all the time, it would just come and go. I couldn’t connect it to anything in particular, it would just block up. And nothing that I had attempted made any difference to it whatsoever. So I used Sound Therapy and after I’d listened to the tapes for about 2 to 3 months then within a period of a week it slowly started to clear and by the end of the week it was just totally clear and I hadn’t experienced that before.

I think my ear had been blocked for most of my life and I tried a number of things over the last 3 to 4 year and they didn’t work. It would block up and get unblocked and I didn’t seem to have any control over it. It was only through listening to Sound Therapy every day for at least 3 hours that it started to clear. Sound Therapy really cleared my ear and I feel very liberated by that . I feel like I can sing, which is something that’s really important to me and I didn’t think that I ever would be able to.

I don’t know why it works, I find it a bit of mystery but I like the mystery of it.

Hans Wuelfert, Lavington, NSW, Australia :

“When I was in the German army in January 1944, I had an infection of both inner ears and the Eustachian tubes. Because my temperature was only slightly elevated I was given a few Aspros. The greater part of the problem became chronic.

A year later I was a gunner in a light armoured car. During gunnery exercise there was a malfunction in the 2cm. Gun which caused some kind of explosion. Fortunately all the hatches were open, but I had little hearing or sense of balance for a few days.

The result of both incidents was tinnitus with a combination of sounds; a waterfall, ringing and static. My eardrums tended to feel sucked in, quite uncomfortable at times, often I could not pop them out when I blew my nose with nostrils blocked.

In 1979 a sinus condition developed which I blamed on the type of chalk I was using as a teacher. My singing tended to be out of tune. The range of notes became narrower. For many years I suffered from tiredness which I now attribute to some degree to the “low-frequency noise.”

In January 1987 I had encephalitis and myelitis endemic to the Murray Valley . At one stage the resulting symptoms were called the M.E. syndrome: chronic lack of energy; diminished long-term and short-term memory, self inflicted stress, pronounced sensitivity to variations in atmospheric conditions.

After two months of Sound Therapy (330 hours) this is my assessment:

Sinus condition has improved gradually and is about 80% better in general.

    Eustachian tubes improved about 50%

Left ear, much lighter noise of a higher pitch, almost pleasant compassed with the original noise. Congestion far less, about 70% better.

Right ear; very slight ringing, higher pitch, some congestion left, about 90% better.

Hearing in general has improved. All the sounds are crisper. At the dentist the “new” crisp sound of the drill nearly made me happy.

Singing: during walks along the open road, there is a “resonance space” again in my head, singing is in tune again and I can correct a wrong note.

Deep refreshing sleep. Requirements shortened by 1-2 hours.

Energy seems to have increased, I find it easier to start something, have a bit more go.

Memory has improved slightly. Words of some forgotten songs have come back and dialling a phone number is a lot easier.

Generally speaking, I feel that a considerable change has been going on within me and apparently still is.”

    K. Joseph Biggs, Burleigh Heads , Queensland , Australia :

“Looking back over past years, I have come to the conclusion that somewhere in my childhood, I closed off my hearing level to a point where the darkness of retreating eventually overcame my ability to want to hear.

…by the time I was 35, I had passed through some of the most disastrous years of my young life. About that time I contracted an industrial disorder where industrial noises repeat in the hearing long after the noise is out of range. Within the next four years, I made an appointment (out of sheer frustration) with a specialist who performed a stapedectomy.

I say categorically, no person should be subjected to this dangerous treatment before being alerted to the alternative treatment which sound therapy provides.

I was always mentally drained, the numbness was still there and there seemed something pressing on the ears which affected my ability to hear. My doctor shrugged his shoulders and said the audio test was the same as that taken about four years ago.

I commenced sound therapy in January 1991. After about 200 hours of listening everyday.I noticed some changes, headaches diminished, tiredness fading, less restless sleep. Shoulder and back pain reduced, posture improved, better sense of direction of sound, improved sense of balance. Hearing improved, fuzzy noises in ears not so apparent.

Previously, trying to talk to a group of people in a room was nearly impossible, and a one on one conversation always brought signs of rejection, when everyone else thought that they were not part of the conversation.

I have now clocked up 444 continuous days for a total of 2043 hours, and now average about 3.5 hours per day. You don’t have to be sick to gain benefit. One very noticeable benefit is the correlation between resonance in the voice and the ear. If you can hear better, you can speak better.

Noises in the ear, (by the way aggravated by an operation) at times now reduce to zero. I am not embarrassed by noisy locations, or entering into casual conversation. Sometimes there is pain in the ears, but this soon passes. The reduced need for sleep, about six hours per night, is sufficient and does not interfere with what may have been necessary previously.

Being able to express thought better, do not tire easily – more energy, posture improved, mental alertness, self confidence, better concentration, more relaxed – but alert, some dizziness – soon passes.

There is no doubt in my mind, the findings of Dr. Tomatis are widespread, with outside noise levels discharging our energy and childhood problems being carried into adult life..a great deal of credit must go to Patricia Joudry for her effort in making the treatment available.”

Intense focus
Norman Altrogge, University student and part-time restaurant worker:

“Over and above assisting me in relaxing and winding down, my hearing became much keener as I listened to the cassettes from day to day. There followed improved concentration and it seemed easier to zero in on things. The listening had a sort of snowballing effect in improving my ability to focus my mind and put myself into whatever I’m doing with a larger degree of intensity.”

Dyslexic adult “switched on”
Cecily Bova, Cape Town, South Africa:

“At last I am able to send you my experience of sound therapy. I have been listening for up to six hours a day since October last year. (Five months) A truly hard case with very stubborn ears. I am not just a visual type, but an artist, deciphering everything thro’ my eyes. Without being told, I already knew I was “locked in” for that is how I have experienced the world, as though I lived at a distance: which makes sense because the eyes are the furthest away sense.

I loved music, but I knew the quality of sound evaded me, and I longed to hear as a musician would. Much as I enjoyed colour tones, rhythms, I knew my ears were not experiencing true sound.

Being a dyslexic adult, with switched off ears, has caused terrible suffering, as you will understand. I am in my mid 50’s and it has taken all these years to wait, and work only with body and eyes, cut off from true sound.

I have experienced a lot of anger and frustration, because of the loneliness and isolation: one of my main hang ups in the world was that I felt invisible. In fact I was beginning to call myself the invisible man (woman). I was ignored, in other words. My anger was in my voice. No doubt all who heard me would switch off.

…The results came and went. I kept a diary for three months. Everything stressed me in the end, change of life, the terrible South African situation with the increased isolationism of that, stressful home situations, homesickness for England, and hostility for South Africa made me feel more locked in than Mandela.

…Last week a change began to take place. I could not sleep a whole night. I was wide awake… my mind clear and active all night. I was frightened by it. Then awake all day, with no fatigue. This has continued, my mind clear, not disturbed. My ears are lighting up. In the past two days I am aware of them as appendages on each side of my head, my ears feel like horns, or shells, I feel their depth into my head. Sound is coming through, I am “switching On”, Patricia, with a calming effect. I can hear the anger in my voice. My speech has become softer; I am so amazed by this listening ability. I keep on thinking it will stop. If it does I’ll go mad.

At last I am aware of the other, the thou in my life. There is no doubt about it. Sound therapy in my case acted like First Aid. I was drowning, like a stranded whale, disoriented, I missed that quality of being bathed in sound. Supermarkets, noisy places, and loud pop music drove me insane. I lived purely with my eyes, focusing on colours and enjoying life in the artistic manner. Any disturbance of that made me angry, critical and aggressive. I always felt as though my privacy was being invaded.

Now my experience of sound therapy has humbled me. I am in awe of sound. I can actively focus on sound sources. It’s incredible, as though I have been given a new instrument, calming my mind and soul.

Bless you, Patricia, and all the brothers who helped you and worked with you to produce this for the man in the street. I could not have afforded the therapy in a listening lab.

Crosswords, social skills, maturation
Claude Heppell, Rimouski, Quebec:

“The most recent effect of my Sound Therapy, after l4 months of listening to the tapes, is rather amusing: for I have lately discovered a capability of doing crosswords, at which I had slaved in vain in the past.

As a purely visual person, it took me a long time to realize effects with these tapes. I was patient and persistent, as I enjoyed the music and found that I missed it when I skipped a day. Gradually I found myself becoming a more social person, feeling more and more love for others, with a powerful new capacity to interact and create in volunteer groups for old people. I am 46, and whereas one might say this was a natural maturation, I believe that, on the contrary, change is more difficult as we get older.

A few months ago, singing some folksongs for my own pleasure, I realized I had more ability to strike the right notes than before. And when I speak, my voice, which I disliked until recently, is gradually becoming more resonant, warm, and well controlled. All thanks to the Sound Therapy cassettes and Walkman.”

More focussed singer
Melanie King, singer-composer, Melbourne, Australia:

“I have had some beautiful benefits from using the tapes – trebled energy, less sleep needed, steadier moods, more focused concentration – and I have notes in the top of my vocal range which are brand new.”

P.S., some months later: “My voice continues to soar eaglebound in new ways!”

Dyslexic hearing
Madonna Schoonder, Sydney, NSW, Australia:

I’ve always had bad concentration & memory. I also have what I call dyslexic hearing. People talk to me but I have no idea what they’re saying most times. It makes no sense to me & I just shut off. I heard about Sound Therapy & wasn’t sure if it would help but wanted to give it a go. I listened for 3 hrs the first night & slept the whole night through & soundly. Something that’s never happened before; my whole life I’ve had trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep more than 2 or 3 hrs, even when exhausted. So for me, that was great. Not only that, I’ve slept well every night since, even with my boyfriend there who literally jumps all around all night & constantly bangs the bed with his legs.

I’ve also noticed my concentration has improved enormously. I can read a book now without my mind wandering & I only need to read it once because it makes sense the first time. My conversations have improved also because people’s words make sense now & don’t seem all jumbled.

The first time I listened to Sound Therapy was just a quick listen from a friend. I didn’t even really know what it was. I’d just had a huge fight with my boyfriend & was extremely upset. Within seconds of listening to the music it calmed me down a lot.

Mind in a fog
Mrs A Stolz, Kirwan, Queensland, Asutralia:

A note to let you know how excited I am at the results I have with Sound Therapy. After approximately 20 hours of listening, I believe I am experiencing positive results.

I am a Registered Nurse working in a neonatal unit where we care for sick and premature babies. There is a lot to learn and know in this relatively new field of nursing. Because each baby’s weeks of gestation, present age, and weight must be considered before starting anything else, I felt my mind was in a fog for a long time in working out their progress. Now I find a joy in being at work that I haven’t had before. It is a marvellous feeling.

I have been listening to the tapes very softly, just before I go to sleep, or sometimes, on days off, while doing housework. I play tapes softly so I can listen to the same one many times without tiring of it before I change to another tape. I look forward to 100 hours of listening and have put on layby walkmans for all the members of my family including grandchildren.

Thank you so very much for making this therapy available.

Better sleep – less sleep, more time
29 year old lawyer:

“I listened dutifully to the tapes for over 200 hours (averaging 6 to 7 hours a day) until a remarkable change occurred in my sleeping patterns. I began to awake at 5:30 in the morning after 5 to 6 hours sleep, and was fully refreshed and ready to leap into action. Previously I needed 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night. I am now a morning member of a gym and have plenty of time to pursue study interests, all before leaving for work. I am continuing to listen and maintain my new sleeping patterns. I have also noticed that I rarely get a stiff neck working at my desk. I often listen while engaged in work and find my concentration is excellent. I feel I am very lucky to have accidentally discovered Sound Therapy and would heartily recommend it to anyone, particularly those wanting to get more out of life.

No more sleeping pills
Wanda S. Harrison, Allen Park, MI, U.S.A.

“I did experience the energy breakthrough. For about a week prior, I had found myself literally at loose ends, unable to make decisions, not really wanting to do ANYTHING. On Tuesday the 17th, I had to force myself to get up at 10:30 a.m. and dragged through the rest of the day and evening. The next morning I awoke feeling like a new person, so full of energy I couldn’t decide what to do first. This is a new experience for me! I simply can’t believe how much energy I have! When we were up at my mother’s old farmhouse in Midland last weekend, I not only cleaned inside the house, but got to work in the yard, pruning the bushes that hadn’t been done for 10 years and finally getting started on the huge task of cleaning up her old garden at the side of the house.

For the first time in many years I am able to lie and go to sleep without taking any pills! This alone makes me feel like a new person, not to be tied to the bottle of tranquilizers at bed time and particularly to wake up after 4-5 hours of sleep feeling totally refreshed and no morning ‘blahs.’ I also find that I no longer need to use laxatives the way I did for many years since I had abdominal surgery when I was seven. My memory is much clearer as are my thought processes as well as my writing ability.”

Bus travel less tiring
Margaret Owen, Balgowlah, NSW, Australia:

“Three days after beginning Sound Therapy I travelled by coach to Brisbane, normally an exhausting procedure, playing the tapes throughout the journey, slept soundly and arrived full of energy into heat wave conditions, spent the afternoon sight seeing at a rapid pace.

The second benefit was being able to cut my sleeping time down to seven hours per night for the first time in my life thus enabling me to get more done. The extra energy has been such a bonus that I don’t care about the acuity of my hearing though I’m sure it’s much improved. I don’t go anywhere without my Walkman, tapes and battery charger. Even walking round the city is not the exhausting experience it used to be.”

Need less sleep, feel more energized
Linda Taylor Anderson, Melbourne, Florida, USA:

“My friend Patricia didn’t endeavour to convince me to give Sound Therapy a try. It was my own idea. I wanted what she had: extra energy, more waking hours and blessed tranquillity. That is why, as a healthy, functioning person, I incorporated sound therapy into my life.

After less than sixty hours of listening, suddenly, incredibly, new sounds were singing in my ears. I had assumed I’d always heard them, but it is amazing how much we hear, yet do not hear. I am now acutely conscious of sound, all sound, including my own voice which I can now control. Octavizing up or down is now easily accomplished. It is the sound therapy that has gifted me with this new awareness. Further amazement came. When properly energized, the body can function on very little sleep. I have always required eight hours of heavy duty sleep. Now I often wake up in the night, after only three to four hours sleep, snap my eyes open, stretch and feel ready to tackle whatever may be coming my way. I do not always rise to the occasion, preferring the comfort and warmth of the bed. But there is none of the old tossing and turning. I lie peacefully, pursuing my ranging thoughts, making promises and programs for the hours and days to come, as I am now able to concentrate my energy into a basic force that is not easily sidetracked. I see others fade; I am fresh and eager for the next encounter. If I feel the approach of tiredness, I simply lie down for a few minutes with the music and drift into rest, rising calmed, refreshed and ready to carry on.”

A year later Linda writes: “I’m still listening. Not three hours a day but at least 45 minutes. I usually listen at night; when I go to bed, on go the headphones. I go to sleep and the music plays on. When I miss a day I’m not happy about it. I feel something important is lacking. It’s as though my internal batteries that provide calm, energy and a feeling of well-being just hadn’t been charged. I’ll never stop listening. Never is a strong word, but that’s how I feel about sound therapy. I never want to be without it.”

Shift worker
Patricia Jankovic, Kirribilli, NSW, Australia:

At a very difficult time in my life, I was introduced to Sound Therapy. It certainly improved hearing loss in my right ear and reduced Tinnitus.

My sense of well-being improved greatly. I was not aware of how unhappy and stressed I was until I started to experience a feeling of happiness inside and a more balanced emotional state.

Being a shift-worker in a Health profession I have noticed better quality of sleep and I am able to be more focused.

I truly look forward to long walks with my Sound Therapy tapes. Somehow I am able to appreciate more the beauty around me.

Sound Therapy will continue to be an important and special part of my life.

Cut sleep by 2-3 hours
Courtney Milne, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada:

“Since the Sound Therapy has taken effect for me, I no longer know what anxiety is. As a photographer, lecturer and writer, I am travelling continually and am bombarded with more than average demands. Even at the times of greatest pressure I feel an inner calm, a peace and tranquillity that lifts me above the stresses of the moment. I have no doubt at all that this is due to the therapy, as I compare my present state with that of a year ago before I began the listening program. At that time I felt always harried, often exhausted and needed eight or nine hours sleep a night; now five or six suffice, and I awake deeply rested and with a supply of energy which remains constant throughout my long days.

Although I experienced the opening of the ear some months ago, I still listen for several hours daily, as I enjoy the music and it keeps my energy unflagging, my peace intact. I find it extremely simple to wear my Walkman almost anywhere without it interfering. I drive, jog, read, listen to the radio, carry on day-to-day conversations, eat my meals and do my photography while listening to the music. I would not be without it when writing as it is conducive to creative thought, the music humming along unobtrusively like a built-in mantra.

Sound Therapy also puts attention on caring for myself. It has had an influence on my eating and drinking habits and my desire for regular exercise – a strengthening of the positive life wish. For example, as a moderate social drinker, it struck me one day that I have no need of alcohol to relax me or make me happy – so why drink any? I now jiggle my ice in a glass of fruit juice and no questions are asked except the usual one: ‘Where do you get all that energy?’

Never slept so well
Mrs Graham, Stockton, NSW, Australia:

I came across Sound Therapy at a trade exhibition. I sat down and spoke to the very nice young ladies at the stand. The reason being, whenever I had background music and a conversation going on at the same time, it was impossible for me to hear the conversation, it was very frustrating. I thought I must be close to a hearing aid for myself at this rate. I could not stand music very loud at all. It was as if my ears were going to explode from the inside out with the pressure I felt inside them, which would quickly result in a bad headache. The other trouble I had was when someone spoke to me I would always say; “Sorry, what did you say?” and before they could finish repeating, I would know what they had said. It was like slow-motion delayed action. I read the Sound Therapy book, which made me understand my problem and it was a great relief I can tell you. I wasn’t going mad or deaf. Whew!

I have been using Sound Therapy for 6 months now. At first I experienced some sleepless nights (which was not really usual for me). 2 A.M I’m awake and that was sleep for me done. I’m over that now, I sleep better than I have slept for ten years. My hearing has improved immensely. I no longer say; “Sorry, what did you say?”. I hear the first time. I take my cassette player, I listen to it in bed every night, I enjoy it. Although you don’t really listen hard to it. Just softly in your ear. I can even stand the top twenty on Saturday mornings (my partner always has this on). I used to leave the house or go back to bed, anywhere to get away from the noise. I handle that okay now too.

Thank you, Sound Therapy. I was quite miserable before, now I am a much happier person. Thanks to the help of Sound Therapy.

To anyone that is shy of this, just try it. It’s great.

Better, shorter sleep
Dan Stuckel, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada:

“Before I began using the Sound Therapy tapes my hearing was becoming progressively worse. Ear specialists told me it was caused by nerve damage, therefore there was nothing which could be done for me. They said the ringing in my ears would become louder as time went on, thereby reducing my ability to hear. I purchased an ‘in the ear model’ hearing aid after I found their predictions to be correct. My hearing did indeed deteriorate. I found I had to wear the hearing aid more and more as time went on, to a point where I was wearing it 80% of the time.

After about 3 weeks of beginning the Sound Therapy, the ringing in my ears began to subside. Along with that my hearing also began to improve. One day I felt something almost like a minor earthquake taking place deep within my ears. Since then my hearing has improved to such an extent that I seldom have to use my hearing aid. I am able to function quite well without it now, after 7 months of Sound Therapy.

To list a few of the other benefits from this therapy: I am able to sleep better and can do with much less sleep than previously required. I am doing less needless worrying, and stressing situations are much easier to cope with than they were before. In fact my entire wellbeing is showing a vast improvement.”

Deep sleep more relaxed
Heidi Munz (check Database for location)

Comments from diary on Sound Therapy treatment – Heidi Munz

Saturday 25 Sept 1999 – I started listening, felt relaxedly tired at evening. Slept very deeply all night, though I slightly woke up a few times.

I felt sort of headache when almost end of tape 1 but it was a sensation of “head bones ache”, like bones being gently moved.

This same sensation of “bones movement” was felt in my lower back, where I’ve had a recurrent pain, now being treated by both Bowen and NSD treatments.

Sunday 26 Sept 1999 – I noticed that my morning walk was more relaxed today, there wasn’t that “rushing pressure” in my walk; I walked rather fast but at a more enjoyable pace. Didn’t feel that anxiety for finishing soon, being back home soon.

I was quite calm when speaking with mum and she was telling me that she had temperature, etc. today.

I have felt a bit sleepy, I did house work this morning, again, didn’t feel that anxiety to finish soon.

Sunday 3 October 1999 – I’ve kept on listening through the week. I had quite an extremely busy week and felt I could cope with grandchildren a lot better than other times, didn’t feel as tired at evenings.

In general, I feel a lot clearer in my mind, I think I now need one or two hours less of sleep; I’ve woken up around 5am most of the days. I sleep soundly and dream normally (whatever is normal for me).

Also, I have felt tired at times (I have overdone in general due family commitments) but the tiredness is of a different sort. Before I felt exhausted.

Monday 4 October – I woke up at 5am again- I’ve felt well, despite the fact that I’ve been doing a lot, I’ve felt tired but in such a different way, it’s like relaxedly tired, not exhausted.

Tuesday 5 October – I’m journaling this day later, as I think this is the day I felt that strong bone pain in my head, like a bone was being moved from its root, like placing it next to where it previously was. The pain lasted for a few minutes (2-3?), was very intense, it reminded me of the hip bones opening at childbirth, or a toothache, something in between these two pains.

Thursday 7 October – I keep on waking up rather early, even before 5am today. Yesterday evening I felt extremely tired, I did a lot during the day, it’s perhaps the reason but the tiredness is just that tiredness and not that sense of being exhausted I had before.

I’m feeling almost an attachment to have the earphones plugged.

Saturday 9 October – I have slept a lot more than I’d done since I started the therapy; I feel relaxedly tired now, not much desire for doing much at all and, at the same time, when I have put myself to do the house chores that needed to be done, I’ve done without that feeling of exhaustion that was always present before. I feel something different in my mind, present and not quite present, or present in a different way?

Wednesday 13 October – I keep on feeling very tired, earache comes and goes, today has been with me most of the time until now (4pm).

General Comments: Worth mentioning is that I’ve been waking up earlier almost since the beginning of Sound therapy; the first week I think I had between 2-3 hours less sleep and felt well all next day, as opposed when I have had insomnia. I need to mention that sleeping patterns have improved over the last years through different natural therapies I have been getting (kinesiology, massages, Bowen massage, chiropractor sessions, acupunture, etc) but, definitely the quality of sleep has changed since Sound Therapy.

Thursday 14 October – There’s some sort of “sensation” still in my right ear; I felt a slight ear bone ache this morning that lasted 1 or 2 minutes only.

Monday 18 October – This morning I wake up just past 5am (becoming usual time since I started sound therapy) and went for a walk. The walking keeps on being brisk but not hurried and, more importantly the internal “urgency” feeling is not there.

Friday 22 October – I keep on waking up around 5am and don’t feel like getting up immediately though. I don’t know if this is out of habit or my mind is ready and not my body, or my body still is trying to have its own way. I sleep less hours, 6 to 7 hours.

I think that the extreme tiring feeling it started gradually subsiding since last Saturday 16. I could then say that the “peak of it” lasted just over 10 days (I remember that it strongly started on 5-6 October).

I have still an almost “faint” sleeping feeling all the time and I can’t tell if I’m really sleepy, or tired or relaxed in a new way.

I’ve been doing telephone interviews for the Dept of Health last three days and it has been busy and my attention not distracted. Although my pattern of working fast and trying to do everything in one day is still there, that “internal urgency” is not, neither the frustration of not having accomplished all at once.

I had a “sort of right ear bone ache” yesterday, this time was located just where the external ear is and it wasn’t strong, the feeling was “opening”, like gentle pushes to make more room; it lasted a minute maybe or just over.

I’m currently doing NLP training and this is also producing changes at a deep level, like a “top up” to previous therapies I attended several years ago. But there are things that I strongly feel are the product of Sound Therapy.

They are not dramatic changes, they are rather subtle, so subtle that they can very easily be overseen. For instance, while in NLP training last week and when trying to copy from the whiteboard from a distance, I noticed that my sight was a bit better, I could read writing that I had not been able to distinguish before. When on the phone, I seem to be more aware of my voice tone and some people’s voices don’t feel as unpleasant as they did before.

Tuesday 2 November 1999 – Probably for some weeks now, I have been sleeping longer hours, not waking at 5am as I did for some weeks.

I don’t see dramatic changes so far, there are changes though. Overall it’s a more relaxed general state.

Monday 15 November – There have been no big changes, neither ear ache; I’ve felt in general more relaxed, slept better, woken up feeling well, but there is still a general “tiring” feeling; I don’t feel 100% yet but, I need to say that I have been extremely busy with my mother’s recent pneumonia and in hospital. I’ve handled this quite well, managed well with my sister facing mother’s issues.

I notice a better thinking quality, as in being more centred in my responses or clearer in my solutions or decisions about little things but could mean something important in the end.

GENERAL COMMENTS

I’m a counsellor (4 years), a hatha yoga instructor (24 years), also have done other therapies (4 years ago) and I’m also a hypnotherapist (2 years). I meditate almost every morning for 30 mins at least. I have increasingly accomplished a more peaceful state and a clearer mind most of the time and, how I feel now is, again, different. There’s a distinction in how I’ve felt since I started the sound therapy that I can’t quite classify just now.

Today is Sunday 4 March 2001 and I need to comment that I keep listening to the 4 tapes from time to time, always experiencing a sense of calmness overall, a clearer thinking. For one or other (practical) reason, I don’t listen to them continuously but definitely, they are a great help for me every time I go through them again.

One clear example of the above was when I bought a house (my first in Australia after 18 years) and moved in July 2000; the whole exercise of looking for a house first, the financing and paper work involved later, the move itself (all of which I did alone – I’ve been divorced for many years) took a lot of energy and work. A few weeks after the move, I started listening to the tapes for some time; the results were clear and loud: good energy level came back, more relaxed.
