Brain Conditions

Brain ConditionsWhen the brain becomes inefficient or flawed in its processing of stimuli, numerous health issues will result, making everyday life difficult to manage. However, the brain is plastic, it can learn and change at any stage of life, and many functions can be recovered with the right stimulus. Direct sensory stimulation is proving effective in enhancing neural firing and mapping of information pathways.

Sound Therapy is an easy, efficient way to provide stimulus to improve brain firing, re-patterning and integration. It can be used by anyone, at home, with minimal support and is very cost effective.

Anxiety

Stress and anxiety

Anxiety is a condition where stress worry and dread have built up to the point they interfere with our daily functioning. Worry about everyday life is exaggerated to the point where it preoccupies the mind.  Sufferers tend to worry frequently about health, money, family, work or school. This worrying is often unrealistic or out of proportion to the situation.

Noise and anxiety

Research has found that noise related stress contributes to anxiety and can increase high blood pressure, peptic ulcers, cardiovascular deaths, strokes, suicides, degradation of the immune system, and impairment of learning.

Brain activity is always either enhanced or depleted by sound, depending on the quality of the sound. This is why Dr. Tomatis said, “Some sounds are as good as two cups of coffee.” Listening to Sound Therapy for three hours a day calms the mind and compensates for and counteracts the draining, stressful effect of low frequency noise.

Insomnia and anxiety

Anxiety is frequently the cause of poor sleep. Insomnia is caused by excessive cortical activity that cannot be stopped. Though Sound Therapy recharges the brain for activity during the day, it also has a calming effect which enables the listener in nearly every case to slip easily and quickly into sleep. While the brain and the nervous system are stimulated by the sound, this results not in a hyperactive state but in a state of active serenity, which allows for deep rest. Sleeplessness due to anxiety can also be resolved.

Survey results indicate that between 70 and 80 percent of Sound Therapy listeners notice an improvement in their sleep. Many insomniacs experience an immediate and dramatic improvement in their sleep.

Nutrition for the Brain

While Sound Therapy can help to stimulate and rebuild brain functionality, it has a greater chance of success if supported by the right supplements.

Nutritional deficiency

The brain is a very nutrient hungry organ. It constitutes only 2% of the weight of the body yet consumes 20% of the energy. This means the brain is ten times more metabolically active than the rest of the body. Therefore if we are suffering deficiency in any of the required daily nutrients, our brain will likely be affected.

Today it is difficult to receive all the nutrients we need in our diet. Our bodies are affected by chemical pollutants in our homes, clothing, cosmetics, air, water, building materials, pesticides and perfumes. The brain is very sensitive to chemical pollutants. Many chemicals cross the blood brain barrier leading to a variety of neural disorders including fuzzy thinking, memory loss, and more serious long term disorders. Two hundred commonly used chemicals are known to have neruo-toxic affects, but very little research has occurred in this field. In order for the body to defend itself from these toxins, extra nutrients are essential.

How nutrition for the brain can help

The great detoxifying organ of the body is the liver, but for the body to detox itself from chemical residues, the right trace elements must be present for the liver to do its job. In order to eliminate any unwanted chemical or toxic substance, the liver must create a specific enzyme. In order to make the enzyme, the liver requires certain minerals. If those minerals are not present in the body, the liver cannot do its job.

The brain must have the right nutritional substances available to it in order to:

• Produce and utilize the right balance of neurotransmitters
• Fire synapses efficiently
• Build new pathways

Sixty minerals are needed by the body but are not produced by the body. Therefore, these materials must be taken in as part of the diet.
Here are just a few examples of why the brain needs minerals:

• Magnesium deficiency can cause restlessness, nervousness, muscular twitching, and unsteadiness.
• Zinc deficiency can cause neurological impairment, influencing appetite, taste, smell, and vision. It has also been associated with apathy, irritability, jitteriness, and fatigue.
• Selenium is needed for the synthesis of some hormones and helps protect cell membranes from damage.
• Copper deficiency also impairs brain functioning and immune system response, including changes in certain chemical receptors in the brain and lowered levels of neurotransmitters.

Colloidal minerals

Colloidal minerals are very minute particles which have already been absorbed and processed by plants. They come in a liquid form and are readily “bio available”, meaning the body can absorb them. They are estimated to be 90% more available to the body than other types of mineral supplements. Colloidal minerals that are derived from plant matter are fully bio available to the body. Rather than trying to figure out and replace individual mineral defieincies, it is safer to take a balanced, naturally derived mineral supplement that supplies all the mineral needs in the right proportions.

Super antioxidants

Highly-reactive forms of oxygen called free radicals create chemical reactions that damage brain cells. If free radicals get out of control, cells will be damaged faster than they can be repaired. Like a biological form of rust, a lifetime of oxidative insult can lead to diminished brain function. Over the last few decades many new sources of anti oxidants have been discovered. The first generation, vitamins A, C and E will work for three hours in the body. The second generation found in grape seed extract and pine bark extract and Ginkgo biloba will last two to three times longer. Third generation anti oxidants, (circuminoids) have now been discovered and will last for up to three days, cleaning your body of free radicals. A good anti oxidant supplement will contain all of these ingredients

The benefits

The health benefits of good quality nutritional supplementation are an essential element of maintaining brain health. The brain depends on the availability of over 90 essential nutrients each day to maintain optimum functioning throughout your life. When these nutrients are supplied you can expect clearer thinking, better memory, deeper sleep, more stable moods, better focus, concentration and long term brain health.

Your Sound Therapy program includes nutrients specifically selected to assist better brain health.

Brain Integration

Right and left brain hemispheres

The left brain hemisphere is the language-processing centre. The right brain is used for spatial judgment, movement, drawing, music, mathematics and technical abilities. Brain integration is one of the keys to improving memory, concentration, creativity, energy levels, IQ, EQ and many other markers of intelligence.

Sound therapy works on both sides to develop areas where we might be weak and improve communication between the hemispheres. For this reason Sound Therapy listeners often find themselves developing new abilities and overcoming blocks.

Why are high frequencies important for the Brain?

Through his study of embryology, Tomatis realised that the first sounds we hear are high frequency sounds because the area of the cochlea which detects high frequencies is the first to develop.

Through his experiments Tomatis showed that high frequency sounds serve as a vital and necessary stimulant for cortical activity. The brain needs high frequencies in order to be fully functional. The electrical charge of the brain, the energy on which it runs, needs to be regularly replenished and Tomatis discovered a way to do this by using specially processed sounds.

The cerebellum

The cerebellum plays a significant role in sensory co-ordination, both visual and auditory, and has been dubbed the autopilot of the brain. It is an area of the brain about the size of your fist, which sits behind the brainstem at the base of your skull. Sound Therapy researchers now believe that any learning difficulty associated with auditory processing problems is linked to the cerebellum.

Researchers are only now beginning to unravel the deeply important role of the cerebellum, for while it directs no specific body functions, it operates as monitor and coordinator of the brain’s other centres and as mediator between them and the body.

It has been known for some time that the cerebellum was responsible for the management of the body’s equilibrium and muscular activity. However, it has more recently come to light that the cerebellum is equally involved in the co-ordination of the sensations of touch, hearing and sight.

Sound Therapy brings about improved function and brain integration of cerebellar pathways and this means that many areas of our sensory and motor function are improved.

Sports

Athletes of all levels stand to improve their performance through the use of Sound Therapy. Though sports performance may seem a far cry form listening to music, in fact they are closely related. Movement and music are two different, but very effective ways of stimulating the brain. Recent advances in the fields of learning difficulties and chiropractic neurology clearly indicate that co-ordination, spatial calculation and response speed can be stimulated if auditory processing is improved. The part of the brain now known to be intimately involved in this connection is the cerebellum, which integrates many of the automatic functions of the body. Sound Therapy may assist with sports performance for a wide range of people from those who have poor co-ordination to top level athletes wishing to maximise their abilities.

Some of the specific ways that Sound Therapy may improve sports performance include:

  • Deeper, more refreshing sleep
  • Higher energy levels
  • Improved spatial judgement
  • Faster processing speed
  • Greater motivation
  • Improved sensory integration
  • More efficient automatic functions including breathing and heart rate
  • Better balance
  • Improved posture
  • Better joint flexibility
  • Reduced pain levels
  • Improved muscle tone
  • Steadier emotions

Music

If you work in a musical field whether it is composing, playing an instrument or singing, Sound Therapy may increase your abilities and satisfaction in this area. Musicians, singers and music lovers report increased auditory perception, greater awareness of tones, frequencies and the emotional impact of music. At the same time, performance is enhanced. Whether you sing in the church choir or perform as a soloist, Sound Therapy is likely to give you both increased ability and enjoyment of your art. The ability to reproduce certain notes, to be inspired to create and interpret, just to enjoy listening, are all lifted to new heights.

This is not surprising, since the sense of listening is fundamental to musical performance and appreciation. If part of the listening capacity has diminished over time, musical abilities must necessarily be impaired. Improving the listening capacity will enhance both the physical ability to perform and the emotional response to appreciate music. Sound Therapy works on the listening capacity in several ways. The physical structures of the ear are stimulated to enhance their performance. Auditory pathways in the brain are activated, making processing of auditory information faster and more efficient, and the emotional psyche is opened on new levels by the process of sonic birth that is stimulated through the high frequency filtering.

Sleep and Sound Therapy

Insomnia

Insomnia is caused by stress, so when our stress is reduced by Sound Therapy, we naturally sleep better. Listeners usually notice an improvement in their sleep even on the first night. Insomnia is caused by excessive cortical excitation that cannot be stopped. Sound Therapy cuts mind chatter and allows the mind to move naturally into the slower rhythms that lead to sleep.

Though Sound Therapy aims to recharge the brain for activity during the day, when you want to rest, it may also have a calming effect which enables the listener to slip easily and quickly into sleep. While the brain and the nervous system are stimulated by the sound, an active serenity may be experienced, which also allows for deep rest. Sleeplessness due to anxiety may also be resolved. The opening of the ear to high frequency sounds re-creates the pre-birth experience and can facilitate the resolution of early emotional anxieties. A recent survey indicates that between 70% and 80% of Sound Therapy Listeners notice an improvement in their sleep. Many insomniacs have experienced an immediate and dramatic improvement in their sleep.

How to listen

Some people benefit from listening to the program as they go to sleep and may listen either for the first 90 minutes or all night. Others will find that listening during the day is more appropriate to fit in with their sleeping and waking routine. For example, some people find the programs helpful to put them back to sleep if they wake in the night, whereas others may use them for an energy boost if they become drowsy in the evening. Each person needs to develop a listening routine that suits their needs and is appropriate to their individual response to the programs.

Deeper, better sleep

Dr Tomatis believes that if we receive sufficient stimulation for the brain, the need for sleep is reduced. Studies have shown that we don’t really need as much sleep as we think because it is mainly our brain that needs sleep, not our body. When the brain has more energy, we need less sleep. Therefore Sound Therapy listeners usually find they need between one and three hours less sleep per night. Deep sleep, medically termed “hypersomnia”, is the most essential type of sleep for our well being. Dreaming sleep or REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is a lighter sleep and with Sound Therapy it may be reduced in length without ill effects. The purpose of sleep is to replenish the brain’s energy. If the brain receives adequate stimulation from sound then the hours of sleep can be reduced.

Information Sheet on how Sound Therapy can assist with Sleep

Neuralgia

Neuralgia is pain that follows the path of a nerve. Pain can result from pressure, damage, inflammation or aggravation of the nerves.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is the pain caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve, the largest of the twelve nerves in the cranium. The trigeminal nerve is primarily responsible for sensation in the face and one of its three branches is responsible for the movement of the jaw as well. The trigeminal nerve Has several connections to the ear and ear drum and can be associated with TMJ, (tempero-mandibular joint) pain, ear aches and stuffy ears
One of the major causes of trigeminal neuralgia is the erosion of the nerve sheath which is actually a loss of the myelin covering of the nerve. Some other causes may include compression by an adjacent blood vessel, physical damage by dental or other surgeries, genetic predisposition or rarely, a tumor or multiple sclerosis. Abnormalities usually occur at the inner nerve fibers that carry the sensation.

The trigeminal nerve is similar to other sensory nerves like the sciatic nerve in the spinal region and the pain caused by compression can be as excruciating as sciatica.

Shingles and neuralgia

Shingles is an infection that results from the reactivation of the chickenpox  virus and causes a painful, blistering rash. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a complication of shingles, causing ongoing pain after the rash has cleared. It’s most likely in older people, and causes continuing pain, after the rash from shingles has healed. The pain is caused by scarring of nervous system tissue in the spinal cord. It may be burning, stabbing, or throbbing, and it may affect more areas than the original shingles pain. The pain can occur in response to minor stimuli. Normally painless things (such as the light touch of clothing) can cause pain, and things that would normally cause slight discomfort become extremely painful.

Relief for neuralgia

Natural therapies are often used to relieve neuralgia as it is a difficult condition to treat with standard medicine.
Relief can be achieved through improve circulation, reduced hyperactivity of the cranial nerves, reduced stress, improved myelination, neural plasticity and inhibition of excess excitation. It is proposed that some of these conditions can be supported by the use of Sound Therapy.

Sound Therapy listeners report relief from neuralgia

“I had a major operation on my leg some years ago and ended up with a lot of nerve damage and resulting pain. When I use Sound Therapy I have no pain in that foot and when I don’t use it I do. We know Sound Therapy has a profound effect on the nervous system, so it helps us both emotionally and physically.” Carol King, Massage Therapist
“Shingles on my face had affected the nerves to my face and head and left some inflammation and damage so they were acute to touch with shooting pains in my face, ear and head. This has now gone. When I first started Sound Therapy the condition was greatly stirred up, so I had to go slowly at first, but it was resolved in less than six months.

Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain and Sound Therapy

Chronic pain can occur because there is an injury or disease in the body that needs attention. The best solution is obviously to find the cause of the disease or injury and treat it, if possible.  But pain can become chronic for another reason. Chronic pain specialists, ask the question, “why does the pain continue long after the injury occurred?”

The answer seems to lie in the fact that all our body parts are constantly sending signals to the brain along our nerve pathways. However, when a body part, say a foot, is injured, that foot stops sending those messages that were letting the brain know, “yes, I’m here, I have five toes, I’m bearing weight, I’m OK” etc.

When those familiar messages cease, the brain assumes the foot has been injured or there is something wrong, so it creates another signal, a distress signal, called “pain.” In the healing process, if the foot does not regain full function, if there is scarring, or nerves have been severed, or the nerves in the pain system are also injured, the normal signals never resume, so it is possible that the pain signal will continue on and on.

Pain and neuroplasticity

Chronic pain can be due to neuroplasticity. This means the brain has changed its structure and its way of communicating pain messages, so these messages have become continuous after the injury has healed. However, neuroplasticity ( the ability of the brain to change) can also lead to healing form chronic pain.

Sound Therapy and how it affects chronic pain

Sound is a direct and easy way to stimulate the brain. Sound Therapy uses highly filtered classical music with augmented high frequencies to produce global brain reactivation. It has been observed that this regular stimulation which reconnects many parts of the brain seems to provide the necessary signal so the brain can let go of its repetitive chronic pain signal. Those with chronic pain from old injuries or phantom pain from amputation have sometimes achieved complete relief through Sound Therapy.

Listeners report how Sound Therapy relieved their chronic pain

“After 16 years of almost constant phantom pain due to amputation of my right leg from a car accident, I feel I have now found an answer. When I got my Sound Therapy I had some response almost at once, and it kept getting better. I didn’t really believe it would help when I started; I had used so many things for phantom pain, even self hypnosis, and had to take painkillers 3 or 4 times a day. Now I rarely take them, and only for some other complaint. The good results continue. It truly seems like a miracle.” Dr. Kathleen Langstaff, Naramata, BC, Canada

“My husband suffered for many years with very bad headaches, which sometimes lasted for several days. Since receiving our Sound Therapy four months ago, we have each averaged more than 4 hours a day of listening. Since the first week or two my husband has not had any more of those headaches. It has also helped me, by lowering my blood pressure and giving me much more energy. My husband is 75 and I am 73. Your Sound Therapy sure is a gift for us older people, as well as the younger ones.” Lorna Cooley, Victoria, BC, Canada:

“My pain is not as sharp and my sleep is less.  The colours are beautiful.  They stand out heaps and are richer and brighter. Reading – there are more gaps in between the letters.  They stand out even more.  This has helped a lot for me.  Life is so much easier now.  But of course I feel like a new person.  The world has changed a lot.”
Larissa Amy, 13 year old girl with ADD and Higher Functioning Autism – Sydney

“I commenced sound therapy in January 1991. After about 200 hours of listening everyday…I noticed some changes, headaches diminished, tiredness fading, less restless sleep. Shoulder and back pain reduced, posture improved, better sense of direction of sound, improved sense of balance. Hearing improved, fuzzy noises in ears not so apparent.” K. Joseph Biggs, Burleigh Heads, Queensland

Brenda Dickerson experienced soreness behind her ears and in her jaw for a long time. She has found that with Sound Therapy the soreness is going. She can now push her fingers in and not scream in pain. “So that is quite impressive as far as I am concerned,” she says, “because nothing else could stop it. Any heavy massage hurts too much.”
From Triumph Over Tinnitus Interview with Brenda Dickerson, Reflexologist

“Probably the biggest thing that Sound Therapy has done for me would be the, in regard to my hearing. But  also I have had for about 12 years, problems with my feet which were caused by breaking both my heel bones in a fall off a scaffold. Since then I had almost nightly problems with burning and a nervous sort of reaction in my feet. But since I started Sound Therapy I haven’t had one night’s problem. The other problem with my feet was quite a deal of pain, most of the time. And after I’d been listening for about 3 months, that all dissipated and now I have very little pain in my feet.

I think Sound Therapy could be given the credit for the feet, because I’ve done nothing else that could have done it and I suppose it’s hard to believe but Sound Therapy is the only thing that’s been around.”  Don Clark, Builder
